Long Island – New York Fishing Report – March 2, 2017

Local ponds and rivers have really benefitted from the warm weather and have sprung out of their winter lull.

Unseasonably high temperatures continue to make dropping a line more and more tempting. Freshwater action has begun to come alive and, on the salt water side, cod are still a worth option to take a trip out. The jacketless days and long fishing breaks may be coming to an end though as cold weather is predicted for this weekend across Long Island.

Jake from White Water Outfitters reports that the cod bite is still a go out of Montauk. The fishing remains very much hit or miss but regardless, most anglers come home with a couple fresh fillets. On the days that it is hot, the action is packed and can make for a memorable experience. As with all fishing, you won’t catch any without taking a chance and getting out. So, if you’re looking for a late-winter refill on fresh fish, book a trip out East and it may be the day the cod are all over.

At River Bay Outfitters, Paul has noticed a jump in anglers over the last week getting out. The local ponds and rivers have really benefitted from the warm weather and have sprung out of their winter lull. Carl’s River in Babylon has been giving up some trout, which must be fish that held over for the winter as the river has not been stocked yet. There was also a reported 2-pound largemouth bass taken out of a local Oceanside pod.

Long Island Fishing Forecast

Get out there while you can before the cold air moves in and cools things back down. There is no better pick-me-up during the long winter than a couple hungry bass or trout. It’s never a bad idea to drop a line to test the waters, especially on a calm day.
