Pennsylvania Fishing Report – August 24, 2017

Late summer fishing is excellent with active smallmouth bass, rock bass, panfish and flathead catfish feeding in waters across the state.

Northwest Region

Crawford County

French Creek

Anglers are catching Smallmouth Bass on various soft plastic lures including tubes, grubs, and ned rigs throughout this stretch. Anglers are catching Northern Pike using live bait and stickbaits.

Venango County

Allegheny River

Anglers are catching Smallmouth Bass on tubes and other soft plastics. Anglers are catching Channel Catfish, Flathead Catfish, and Bullhead Catfish throughout the Venango county section of the Allegheny River. Anglers are catching a few Muskellunge and Northern Pike with live bait being the bait of choice.

Justus Lake

Anglers are catching trout and Smallmouth Bass in 25-40 foot of water.

Kahle Lake

Anglers are catching crappies and Largemouth Bass. Anglers were using jigs as their bait of choice.

Northeasatern Region

Southern Luzerne And Southern Columbia Counties

The Susquehanna River has been returning to normal flows and the fishing has drastically improved. Anglers are finding success targeting both muskies and Smallmouth Bass. Currently the best baits for muskies are large suckers and large bucktail spinners. Smallmouth are being caught on soft plastics and lipless crankbaits.

FEW Reservoir has been giving up some nice bass and trout recently. Small to medium shiners and night crawlers seem to be the ticket for those. Crappies are being caught on jigs tipped with small fatheads.

Lily Lake has been producing some bass, but it has been tough fishing. There has been little to no activity on the local trout streams.

As a reminder, Lily Lake and Lake Irena are scheduled to receive fall plantings of trout in October. Check the website for dates and times.

The Susquehanna River has claimed the 12th boating fatality of the year in the Commonwealth. The victim was NOT wearing a flotation device. The importance of not only having, but wearing a flotation device, can’t be stressed enough. With the variety of wearable devices commercially available today, there really is no legitimate reason not to wear one.

Northern Pike and Southern Wayne Counties

The fishing has been pretty good in Lake Wallenpaupack with the water temperatures holding around 75 degrees and the rain keeping the water levels above normal.  Stripers and other bass have been hitting very well, along with catfish and panfish.  Catfish are being caught at dusk into the night and caught on any stinky bait.  Other lakes and ponds in the district are really weeded up and make it hard to fish; but if you are determined, you can catch some big Largemouth Bass.

Boating, especially on the weekends, is still very popular on Lake Wallenpaupack.  The Delaware River is a good place to go for rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. No matter what type of boating you are doing, you should still consider wearing your life jackets.  They will save your life.

Centre County

Sayers Lake

Anglers have reported catching crappies from the fishing pier and causeway area. Minnows and plastic jigs seem to be most effective. Catfish have also been reported from Upper and Lower Greens Access areas. Success has been found with nightcrawlers, chicken livers and hotdogs.

Sayers Lake Spillway

Anglers have been doing well for crappies fishing off the wall of the spillway. Rubber jigs under a bobber seems to be most effective. Some catfish have also been reported in the evening hours in this area.

Black Moshannon Lake

Pickerel and bass have been reported around the lake, fishing the edges of the weeds. Rubber worms and spinners have been successful, as well as live bait.

Tioga County

So far it has been an exceptional year for rainfall, and the wild trout streams have been flowing above normal. There have been some large wild Brown Trout caught in many of the class A stream throughout the county. Successful anglers have been using large streamer patterns or even a mouse pattern being fished on the surface after dark.

Remember that the regular trout season is winding down and the extended season will be upon us shortly; and that means a change in the regulations for trout fishing. Please consult your summary book before you make a fishing trip, before the coming hunting seasons.

As for the warm water fishing in the county, there have been many reports of a great Channel Catfish bite on the Tioga River at the spillway. One angler caught a Channel Cat that was over 30 inches. If you do wish to hit the bite, consider using chicken livers or cut bait.

The Cowanesque River, at the spillway of Cowanesque Lake, has also been producing some nice fish. Anglers report catching Tiger Musky using live Bluegills between Midnight and 3 AM. If you want to pursue the elusive musky, try it late at night and with a big bait.

Did you know, that the PFBC does not only stock trout?!?!?!?! Currently, Hammond Lake and Cowanesque Lake have received multiple stockings this summer of Tiger Muskies and Hybrid Striped Bass. For more information on these types of stockings, contact the Fisheries Management Warm Water Unit Division or visit the PFBC website.

Southeastern Region

E. Berks/N. Montgomery County

Schuylkill River

Anglers on the Schuylkill River are landing nice size Flathead Catfish this time of year. Bluegill seems to be the preferred bait, but fish are being landed on all sorts of baits from night crawlers to chicken livers.

With the weather getting cooler in the evenings, it’s a great time of year to get out at night and enjoy some great catfishing. Just downstream of the Black Rock Dam is a great place to fish from the shore. Montgomery County Parks maintain the Canal Park on the Mont Clare side of the River. This park offers lots of parking and is open all evening to anglers. All Montgomery Park rules apply at this location: a sign board is in place listing all the local rules, which include no open fires & no alcohol on park property.

Perkiomen Creek

Anglers have been catching Smallmouth Bass, Rock Bass and panfish on spinners, small plastic worms and plugs.
