Long Island Fishing Report - November 2, 2017

With water temperatures beginning to drop, both striped bass and blackfish bites have been picking up all over the island for both surf and boat anglers.

Though it might not feel like fall, with weather reaching the 70 degree mark today. The fall run has definetly begun around the island. Bass are being caught all over the island from surf and boats. While the boats are starting to see the blackfishing improve with the water temperatures beginning to drop.

Metro New York Fishing Report

Hudson Park Bait And Tackle have seen an improvement in the blackfish action. The action has been great with a lot of smaller fish but there are definently some bigger fish around. With the biggest being a 10 and 12lbs. John thinks more big blackfish will move in with the water temperatures starting to drop. He also mentioned that people are catching schoolie bass with some bluefish mixed in.

Over at Stella Maris in Brooklyn, reports that the boat fisherman have been having a lot of success with the Striped Bass. These bass have been trolling gear such as Spoon Fed bunker spoons and Mojo rigs. They had a huge 54lb striped bass weighed in over the weekend caught on one of the spoons. The also said that blackfish has been picking up. They have green crabs in stock and will have white crabs in a day or so. They also mentioned in the surf guys are picking up schoolie bass on a variety of plugs.

Long Island South Shore Fishing Report

At Bay Park Fishing Staion, they had blackfish up to 8 pounds over the weekend. They also reported good numbers of big striped bass in the area. Many of these fisherman are trolling 30-50 feet of water and using bunker spoons as well. Bass as big as 44lbs were recently caught.

Causeway Bait And Tackle also said the troll bite outside of debs inlet has been amazing. Bunker spoons and mojos also working the best for these fish. They said they heard of quite a few threasher sharks in the mix with these bass. With a bunch of hook up and a couple of sharks landed.

Paul the owner of River Bay Outfitters, told me that his customer “photo” Taso had some great action on the fly with schoolie bass in the Jones Inlet area. He was fishing after work and left them biting after dark. Paul also mentioned, Jamaica Bay has had some good schoolie action with some keepers mixed in as well. On the fresh water side of things action remains good at all of the local lakes and ponds. Trout seems to be the target species with all of the local places stocked for the fall.

Captree Bait And Tackle, had some big blues weighed in over the weekend. The biggest one, came from the surf and hit the scales at 14lbs. They also reported having some nice bass from the surf up to 20lbs. They said the party boats have had some trips where they have limited Out and had to head back to the dock early. They said there are still some small weakfish in the area as well.

Long Island East End Fishing Report

The guys over at White Water Outfitters told me that they have seen the bass fishing improve in the Shinnecock Inlet this week. They have also still have had some albies in the area. They have heard good things from the north fork over the weekend of blitzing bass and albies. Fishing should only get better this weekend with the temperatures dropping.

In Montauk, at Westlake Marina, reports fisherman fishing for seabass in federal waters have been having a lot of success. Chris said striped bass fishing has also been good with guys using eels. Blackfish has also picked up out east as well. They have hermit and white crabs in stock, but make sure to give a call first as these baits can go quick this time of year.

Staying in Montauk at Montauk Marine Basin, saw a outstanding fishing yesterday with striped bass and bluefish making a strong push into the area. Albies have also still been around the point making for some great action. He said he has also heard the seabass fishing has been great in federal waters as well.

Long Island North Shore Fishing Report

On the north shore Capt.Stu of Northport Charters, told me that there is still bait everywhere. Things were a little slow due to the storm and strong winds. But he did say, there were big schools of peanut and adult bunker are in the harbor with blues and schoolie striped bass on them.

Miller Place Bait and Tackle said before and after the storm this past week fishing has been amazing with many fish weighed in. One of their customers Rick brought in a nice 20lb striped bass caught in the Rocky Point area at dead low tide. They also reported that blackfishing from the surf has been great as well. With one of their customers limiting out in just a few hours.

Miller Place Bait and Tackle Update: I just heard that there were big gorilla blues that hit the Cedar Beach area yesterday afternoon. Sue, received a call and heard it was an absolute frenzy. Many of these big blues were from 10-15lbs. They said bunker chunks and pencil poppers were working best.

Chris, at Blue Water Ventures told me when I stopped in the shop that action has been insane on the north fork. He has seen and heard of blitzing striped bass right at your feet in the surf. He said there has also been some nice size bluefish mixed in as well.

Long Island Fishing Forecast

Looking forward to this weekend, the weather looks like it will be cooling off a little bit. This should only make the fishing around the whole area even better. A variety of species should be on the move starting this weekend. From boat to surf around Long Island there seems to be an option for everyone. So get out there and enjoy! Tight lines!
