Long Island - New York Fishing Report - January 18, 2018

Once again, things have been pretty quiet around the island on the fishing front. Many anglers decided to stay in or head over to one of the fishing shows this past weekend. I did however get a couple of reports from a few shops.

Long Island Fishing Report

At Stella Maris Bait And Tackle in Brooklyn, they reported that the party boat “The Brooklyn” out of Sheepshead Bay had some really good action with the mackerel earlier in the week. The boat was not able to sail the last couple of days due to weather, but hopefully if the weather and the ocean cooperate they will be able to get out one day this weekend.

Also in Brooklyn, at Bernie’s Bait and Tackle, they followed up that report of mackerel being caught on “The Brooklyn” as well. They also reported that herring fishing has been spotty in the area all depending on the weather. They said the best location lately for herring from shore has been around Coney Island.

In Baldwin, at River Bay Outfitters, Paul told me things have been slow on the freshwater side of things due to the cold temperatures. If you are looking to stay warm though, Paul is holding a bunch of fly tying classes throughout the week. Give the shop a call for more details about these classes he runs.

Causeway Bait and Tackle in Wantagh, said while the fishing has ended for many people the shop has been very busy with rod building and the repairing reels for the upcoming season. The time is now to get your rods and reels dropped off for the upcoming season so you are without your favorite set-up when the fish show up.

Long Island Fishing Forecast

For the weekend, hopefully the weather breaks and the boats that are still sailing can get out for either mackerel or cod. Call the night before to make sure that the boat is still sailing the next day. As I mentioned before, if you have a rod that you want to be built or other repairs needed on other gear this is a great time to head over to your local shop and get those things taken care of. If you are in the market for a new boat, the New York City Boat Show starts next Wednesday. On The Water will be there so make sure to stop by and say hello and grab an Anglers Almanac if you have not gotten one already.
