Cod is the name of the game this week on Long Island. Anglers from all over the island hopped on boats over the weekend and during the week when they were able to sail and were rewarded with outstanding cod fishing. Inshore, there still have been some reports of herring after the ice melted and on the freshwater side of things hearing some good reports from the Connetquot.
At Bernie’s Bait and Tackle in Brooklyn, they reported many of their anglers were heading out to Montauk to hop on one of the party boats in search of cod. Locally, they did have some anglers stop in the shop to grab some rigs for herring. The action has been steady with the herring, but they have not heard much on the mackerel front.
I talked to Jeff at White Water Outfitters and he said the cod action has been on fire. Boats such as the Miss Montauk reported some amazing days out on the water. If you have any rods and reels that need to be serviced make sure you drop them off now to White Water Outfitters so they will be good to go come spring.
Paul at River Bay Outfitters reported, the warmer weather on Sunday had the Connetquot packed with anglers. One of his customers did very well picking up 4 trout on dry flies. He also told me that he had an angler come in who fished Belmont Lake and picked up a trout by the outflow of the lake. Paul will be heading to the fly fishing show this weekend in Edison. The shop will be closed Friday through the weekend, and will re-open next Wednesday.
If you are in the market for a new boat or just want to check out what is new in the boating world, the New York City Boat Show started yesterday and will run through the weekend. On The Water will, of course, be at the show all weekend working the booth. We have some great giveaways for you anglers signing up for a new subscription. Make sure to come by say hello and talk some fishing.

See you at Javits Saturday!
