Long Island Fishing Report - February 8, 2018

Most reports this week said it has been cold and either no one is fishing or the action has been slow.  I have heard however of some herring around.  It might not be lights out action, but some days you can put a catch together.  The same can be said for the Cod.  The action this year started out hot, then it dropped off a little bit, but it seems a new body of fish has moved in and things look to be getting better again.   I did get a good report from the fresh water side of things this week.

Paul said he had a customer head up to the Mianus River in Connecticut and do very well.  The customer caught a bunch of trout on the fly.  In our local waters Paul had a customer new to fly fishing head out to the Connetquot this past weekend.  He said the angler hooked up with 20 fish and landed 10 of them.  Sounds like a pretty good day on the river if you ask me.

For the weekend the weather looks to warm up a bit.  If the boats are able to sail try and hop on one of the head boats for some cod fishing.  If you are a fly fishing fisherman in the area I think I already know where you will be trying to fish this weekend.  With the warm weather the ice might melt off some of the lakes and ponds.  Pickerel are always a great freshwater species to target this time of year.  No matter what the temperature is, these fish always seem to be hungry and ready to strike.  If any of the fishermen out there have your own reports from this past week, post them below.  Always great to read what you anglers are catching this time of year.   Good luck everyone and tight lines!
