Long Island - New York Fishing Report - February 1, 2018

With almost no boats sailing this week due to weather, it was tough to put a fishing report together.  One good thing from over the weekend was, meeting a ton of you fisherman at the New York City Boat Show.  Thank you to everyone who stopped by signed up for a subscription and said hello. It was great to hear your feedback about the magazine and talk a little fishing.  I called around to the tackle shops this week and this is what I heard on the fishing front.

In Brooklyn at Bernie’s Bait & Tackle, they report the herring fishing has slowed down.  Guys are still going after them at the local docks and piers, but fishing is not as steady as it was before.  They mentioned a lot of their customers have turned their attention to ice fishing.  Anglers have been coming in almost everyday picking up supplies to hit the ice with.

Paul at River-Bay Outfitters said, he had customers that fished the Connetquot on Saturday and had a decent day.  They caught some fish, but the main thing Paul mentioned to do to catch fish, is to slow things down this time of year to trigger a bite.  Paul still has his fly tying classes going on for all levels to enjoy.

At Causeway Bait & Tackle in Wantagh, Bob said, things have been quiet lately as far as fishing reports go.  They did hear of good cod reports in previous weeks, but heard fishing slowed down before the bad weather came in and did not let the boat sail.  They are however busy with rod and reel repairs and mentioned the time is now to bring them into the shop for service.

At White Water Outfitters Jake said, he also heard there was a good cod bite in weeks prior to this one.  As mentioned before though, he has not heard much with the boats not being able to sail.  He did mention they were also busy servicing rod and reels and getting other projects done for spring.

Fishing Forecast for Long Island

Well it is Super Bowl weekend and for New Yorkers it might be a tough one to find a team to root for.  If you are looking to get out of the house, cod boats should be sailing this weekend.  Also, for the fly guys the Connetquot has remained steady and is always a great option this time of year.  You can also target your local creeks for schoolie stripers and white perch this week as well.  Hope everyone enjoys their weekend, either watching the big game or heading out and bending a rod.  Make sure you send in your fishing pictures and tag us on Instagram, to be featured online or in the magazine.
