Freshwater fishing continued to be the best option this week, with saltwater opportunities widdled down to cod, a few herring, and holdover stripers.
At River-Bay Outfitters, Paul said that the Connetquot River is still fishing very well. Almost all of his regulars have been hitting the river as of late. Paul said fishing was so good that he had two anglers that were fairly new to fly fishing stop in and buy some gear. They headed out later in the day to the Connetquot; they called Paul later to tell them that they caught ten fish each!
White perch continue to bite well–and their white, firm fillets can provide a tasty bite for the angler. The crew at Chasing Tails in Oakdale recommends casting a ⅛-ounce jighead tipped with a 2-inch Mr.Twister curly tails in chartreuse or motor oil. Every once in a while, a fisherman hooks a small striper while fishing for perch, and is taken for a ride on the light, freshwater tackle.
On the freshwater side of things, Bryce at White Water Outfitters said the local ponds and lakes have started to produce some better action with pickerel and bass as of late.
Fishing Forecast for Long Island
Tidal river white perch (and bonus striper) action continues to be the top pick this weekend. This week’s warmup should have the perch feeding at a fever pitch. Trout fishing is close to a slam dunk at the pay-to-play Connetquot River. Hitting the ponds for bass and pickerel is a likely bet as well.
