I don’t know of anyone who has been fishing around the Cape recently as we’ve had our hands full dealing with coastal flooding, hurricane-force winds, downed trees, and power outages.
One bright side is that there will be a lot of new blow-downs to fish around in the Cape’s bass ponds this spring.
The folks from the Sandwich trout hatchery were planning to start the stocking process this week. Their efforts were hampered by the weather, but any trout they do get into the water will have an opportunity to acclimate without much angler harassment. Check out their handy interactive trout stocking map to see which water bodies have been stocked.
Here’s the Massachusetts trout stocking season scouting report:
Spring trout stocking — Close to 500,000 brook, brown, rainbow and tiger trout will be stocked this spring from MassWildlife’s five hatcheries located in Sandwich, Palmer, Belchertown, Sunderland, and Montague. These fish, coupled with the more than 65,000 fish stocked last fall, will provide some excellent fishing in the coming months. Stocking is scheduled to begin in the southeastern area of the state during the first full week of March with other regions of the state expected to follow soon after. Anglers can get daily stocking updates at Mass.gov/Trout.
2018 spring trout stocking stats:
Most of the trout will be over 12 inches
More than 40% of the trout will be over 14 inches
More than 51,000 brook trout will be over 12 inches
More than 45,000 brown trout will be over 12 inches
More than 200,000 rainbow trout will be over 14 inches
More than 1,200 brown trout will be over 18 inches
More than 500 brook trout will be over 15 inches
More than 2,500 tiger trout will be over 14 inches
Fishing Forecast for Cape Cod
The weather on Sunday is looking not-half-bad, and even if you can’t find a pond that has been freshly stocked, there are plenty of trout that have held over from the fall stocking. Bait and slower-moving artificials (or flies) should produce for you. Bass and pickerel will continue to bite in the shallow ponds. A live shiner under a float remains the best tactic, especially with rain and snowmelt dropping water temperatures recently. Unfortunately, we’re looking at another nor’easter storm on Monday. If you’re looking for something to do indoors this weekend, the New England Saltwater Show in Providence is certainly worth the ride to Rhode Island.
Long pond in Plymouth was just stocked, use lures for the big fish.
I’ve been slaying it with spinners.

Everything was held off due to the storms.
