The warmer weather this week finally got a good amount of anglers out on the water. Many of the anglers focused their attention to the freshwater scene. Although, I did have some reports of anglers targeting some schoolie striped bass and finding success. Here is the run down for this past week:
In Brooklyn at Bernie’s Bait and Tackle, they said that the herring have been showing up again at the usual local piers and docks in the area. While it has not been on fire, the action has approved and some anglers are putting some nice catches together. They also heard some rumors of anglers catching some schoolie striped bass in the area as well.
At River-Bay Outfitters in Baldwin, Paul said the Connetquot has still been fishing extremely well. He said make sure you get there very early to get a good spot and make sure to make those reservations beforehand. Paul also mentioned that the trout bite in the Mianus River in Connecticut has been great. There are experiencing their winter black stone fly hatch, so the anglers matching the hatch with similar flies have been really dialed in.
At Causeway Bait & Tackle, they said that they have not heard much from the saltwater front but a lot from the local lakes. They said with the warmer weather this week, anglers were finding a lot of success with the pan fish. Mealworms and other small baits did the trick for these fish.
At White Water Outfitters, Bryce said that there has been some decent striped bass action in their part of the island. He said the larger fish were coming on bait and the smaller sized striped bass were coming on smaller jigs. He also mentioned, the freshwater action is getting better by the day.
This weekend looks like it is going to be a wash with the Nor’easter coming in late tonight and through tomorrow. Your best bet for early next week will probably be to hit a local pond or lake for some panfish. When the saltwater clears up try fishing for some schoolie striped bass that report seems to be getting better by the day. There are also two great shows to head to this weekend that On The Water will be in attendance. One that started today and runs through the weekend is, the World Fishing and Outdoor Expo. If you are looking to stay on the island, make sure you head to the Ward Melville Fishing Show this Saturday. Doors open at 8am. It is a great show for all ages and is put on by the high school fishing club. I will be there at the On The Water booth so make sure you stop by and grab a magazine and talk some fishing.

When is Fishing season of Stripe Bass in NY
Hey Catherine,
If you are fishing on Long Island for striped bass the season starts on April 15th. You can however still target striped bass before then, but it is strictly catch and release.
