Things were once again on the slow side this week. Though the weather looks to finally be warming up, many anglers did not fish this week making a report tough to come by. Stop in a bunch of the tackle shops this week to deliver the new April edition of On The Water, this is what the word from the different shops were.
In Brooklyn at Bernie’s Bait and Tackle, they said things have been pretty quiet this week. However they have heard of some anglers still picking away at the herring and also some reports of anglers starting to target schoolie striped bass in the area.
At River-Bay Outfitters, Paul said anglers are still catching trout in his neck of the woods on the fly rod. He said, a group of anglers from the shop and himself went up to a river in Connecticut this past Monday and had a lot of fun catching over 20 trout. Make sure to pick up the April edition of On The Water to read Paul’s article for fly fishing around Long Island.
In Wantagh at Causeway Bait & Tackle, while the trout fishing has slowed down a little bit, the largemouth bass fishing has picked up on the local lakes. They have also heard of some reports of anglers having great success with schoolie striped bass in the back bays. The bass should be moving in greater number in the next couple of weeks, with the temperature starting to warm.
While stopping in White Water Outfitters, they said anglers in their area are starting to target striped bass as well. The freshwater scene has been slow, but with the warmer weather and with the area lakes and ponds Brit stocked again soon that action should pick up as well.
I talked to Carmine today at The Campsite in Huntington, he said he has heard of reports of anglers catching white perch. He has also heard of reports of anglers catching striped bass on the North Shore in the back bays.
Sue at Miller Place Bait & Tackle, followed up the reports of schoolie bass in the area. She also said she had one anglers who was having a lot of success with pickerel and trout as well. They will be stocked with all the bait and rigs needed for the upcoming blackfish and spring flounder season.
Fishing Forecast for Long Island
With the weather finally warming up over the weekend, it is time to get out there and fish. Even if it is not a target species you are used to the first warmer days are not days to pass by. Try hitting the back bays for some schoolie bass or white perch. Freshwater should start heating up as well. Many freshwater fish will start to be more active with this warmer weather. Try throwing larger swim baits to inmatate the smaller rainbow trout that were stocked. This can be for joking up with a big large mouth bass this spring. Catch them up and make sure you send your photos in to be featured.
