Will spring ever come? Another week and more snow for the area. The good news is despite the bad weather, anglers have still been able to catch some fish. Though the saltwater action has been pretty slow, the freshwater seems to be getting better, especially with the restocking of trout happening this week. Here is what I heard this week around New York.
In Brooklyn at Stella Maris Bait and Tackle, things have been pretty slow in the area lately due to the weather. Some of the local party boats have been going out and have had OK success with cod and ling. The flounder season has started out as a slow one so far. Things should hopefully improve next week with the warmer weather on the horizon.
I talked to Paul at River Bay Outfitters, he said he has heard of some schoolie striped bass in the area in the back bays. Paul said with the local waterways being restocked this week the trout fishing has been very good. He also mentioned that on opening day at the Carmans River anglers did very well with the trout. Make sure to give the shop a call for more information.
At Causeway Bait and Tackle, they have not heard much from the saltwater over the past week. They did, however, follow up with the report that the trout action has been very good since the restocking. Small gold spinners have been doing the trick with these hungry fish.
White Water Outfitters told me that they have been getting better reports of schoolie bass in their area lately. While the reports are nothing crazy, the action has improved and seems to be getting better as each week goes by. They have also heard of reports of bunker in the area as well. It should all start to heat up soon, we just need the weather to cooperate.
At the Campsite Sport Shop, Carmine said he did not have much to report from either the winter flounder or blackfish season so far. He did mention like the other shops that most of his anglers are fishing for trout and are doing well.
Fishing Forecast for Long Island
It seems your best bet for this weekend will be to go after some of those freshly stocked trout. Make sure to stop by one of your local tackle shops to get the info of what most anglers have been catching these fish on. The weather looks to finally be warming up mid next week, so I expect we will have a lot more to report next week and the weeks to follow.

Do you’ll know when the Squid show up in Greenport LI?
Also where do you fish for them?
We usually see Squid in the Eastern Peconics by Early May. Any Pier with lights can hold Squid at night.
wondering when stripers will arrive into morichies inlet ??
When will the largemouth bass start to get real active?
Did you guys remove the fishing report archives?????!!!!!
That was a really nice thing to have. A little upset about this.
