Long Island – New York Fishing Report – July 12, 2018

Fluke, porgies, and seabass seem to be great options for you inshore fisherman.  Offshore the tuna action has been good and you might have a shot at some sharks as well!

The striped bass bite has been on fire this past week in Montauk and shows no signs of slowing down.  Offshore the tuna bite remains strong with reports of many bluefin, yellowfin, and big eye. Closer to shore on the inshore reefs both porgies and seabass fishing has been staying hot with many anglers limiting out.  The fluke fishing has been steady depending on where you fish, but there have been many big fish coming up such as the 15 pounds caught in Brooklyn this past week and the 12 pounder weighed in Montauk. The great news is there are many options for a variety of species no matter where you live in the metro area or on Long Island.  Here is what the local shops had to say.

Rick from Harbor Marina of East Hampton said, as a later than usual Spring Migration winds down, Stripers continue to journey along the South Fork towards Montauk. Rounded Montauk Point on Monday, we passed several charter boats sweeping wireline and we were soon greated by gin clear water and large schools of sand eels being pursued by striped bass ranging from just below keeper size to some quality fish in the 30 to 40 pound range. Classic striper tail slapping and gulping of surface bait was quite prevalent as they slowly moved to the East. Bluefish in the 4 to 8lb class were also in the mix. Definitely a great time pursuing such quality fish on light tackle. In addition to Montauk, the Fisher Island chain continues to hold quality fish, but most of this action is transitioning to a mid-summer “Striper Night Bite”.  Fluking while a bit inconsistent has its moments in the eastern section of Gardiners Bay and north of Gardiners IsIand. the Sea Bass fishing has been steady and boat limits are very realistic across most of Eastern Long Island. Porgy fishing is also very solid with nice size fish at most of the usual spots. One of the great things about Three Mile Harbor as a home port, are the many great fishing locations within striking distance from West to East and South to North.
