Pennsylvania Fishing Report – August 30, 2018

The warmer weather has bass on the hunt in the early morning and late evening hours. Water levels are good and anglers are catching trout using nymphs and scuplin patterns.

Northwest Region

Mercer County

Shenango Reservoir

Anglers are catching White Bass and Hybrid Striped Bass around the reservoir so take some time to research the difference between the two. Anglers are catching nice size panfish around the reservoir. Starting January 1, 2019, crappie must be 9 inches to keep with a creel limit of 20 fish per person per day. Fishing has been slower due to the warmer water in August, but temperatures are falling, so the fishing should start picking up.

Western Erie County

Lake Erie

Anglers are catching Walleye between 60 and 80 feet of water straight out of Walnut Creek to the Ohio line. Anglers are catching a few Yellow Perch, but that should increase over the next few weeks. Anglers are seeing Steelhead in small numbers at the mouth of Crooked Creek and Walnut Creek. In the next month, anglers should start catching Steelhead consistently on boats and at the creek’s mouths.

Tioga County

Tioga Lake

The lake is still closed due to major, post-flood clean-up efforts. At this time there is not an estimated time of re-opening. For more information contact the Ives Run Park office directly.

Beechwood Lake

Anglers are catching Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass within the lily pads. Various plastics are working. Weightless senkos and Carolina rigged creatures are working very well.

Anglers are also catching Walleye near weed lines. Nightcrawlers, live shiners and crankbaits are working best. Yellow Perch and shad colors are most popular.

In the evening hours, anglers are catching bass using topwater frogs in the lily pads and/or whopper ploppers near the weed edges/fallen trees.

Nessmuk Lake

Anglers are catching bass and other panfish using a variety of baits and lures. Remember, this lake is currently being managed under catch and release regulations. Try whopper ploppers, inline spinners or senkos for bass. Small poppers and roostertail spinners are working.

Tioga River

Anglers are catching Walleye and Smallmouth Bass using inline spinners, shallow diving crankbaits and live shiners. Anglers are also catching pickerel, rockbass and catfish.

Pine Creek

Water levels are good. Anglers are catching Smallmouth Bass using streamer patterns, small crankbaits, poppers and various live baits.

With the warm weather, anglers should refrain from targeting trout.

Lycoming County

Rose Valley Lake

Anglers are catching Yellow Perch, bass, Bluegill and Walleye using a variety of baits and techniques.

Clinton County

Fishing Creek

Fishing Creek water levels and color are good. Look for caddis and sporadic ISO’s to take fish on top. Be sure to target stream banks with terrestrials (e.g. ants, beetle patterns).

Most anglers are catching trout using nymphs (dark/golden stoneflies; green weenie; scuds; sunken ants). Anglers are also catching trout using sculpin patterns.

West Branch Susquehanna River

The warmer weather has bass on the hunt in the early morning and late evening hours. Dragonflies and Damselflies are everywhere and a few fish are rising to them!.

Anglers are catching bass using crankbaits and poppers. Small streamer patterns are also working. A few anglers are catching musky, others are getting follows. A few anglers are catching Bluegill using small spinners.

Centre County

Spring Creek

Spring Creek is fishing well. Water temperatures are holding in the 50s-low 60s.

Anglers are catching trout using Walt’s worms and small nymphs. Other patterns that are working include black zebra midge, green weenie, scuds, sunken ants.

Target stream banks and overhanging vegetation with few terrestrials (e.g. beetle #12-18; ant #12-18).

Olive or black streamer patterns #6-10 will also work.

Northeastern Region

Western Bradford and Sullivan Counties

Wyoming and Northern Luzerne Counties

Area anglers looking for panfish have been having much success fishing hi/lo rigs baited with worm on the bottom of area lakes and ponds. Another great method to get down to the bottom is to fish a small hair jig on a slip bobber; make sure to set it up with the jig a foot or two off the bottom. It is a good idea to sweeten the deal with a grub and be patient. Recently, some real nice bluegill have been landed this way. Concentrate on water with depths between 6 and 12 feet in most lakes and look for submerged structure or areas where depth changes occur rapidly.

Harveys Lake

Harveys Lake has been giving up some Smallmouth Bass lately but you have to get out there late at night to get them. Work crankbaits and soft rubber on jigs down low in areas around rocky points and any submerged structure you can find.

Susquehanna River

Right now, about the only thing the Susquehanna River is good for is catfishing (or floating REAL fast downriver in a kayak). Nice fish are holding in areas with large eddies especially if you can find such water near the mouth of a tributary. Get some chicken livers, shrimp, blood bait, hotdogs or whatever you have out there in a spot where it can hold bottom and you should find some fish.

Southeastern Region

Eastern Schuylkill County

Tuscarora Lake

Tuscarora Lake has been fishing tough for the past few weeks, but a few bass are being caught during early morning hours and near dark in the evenings. Plastic Worms and top-water baits have done alright for Largemouth Bass. Live bait has been catching panfish. Crappies, perch, and bluegills are all biting well recently.

Little Schuylkill River

Little Schuylkill River continues to hold trout in most of the deeper pools. Very little pressure has been seen but fish are biting if you can avoid scaring them when you approach. Clear water has them a bit finicky, so live bait or small flies will work well.

Northampton County Fishing Report

Delaware River and Lehigh River

The local streams have returned to more seasonally appropriate levels. Bass anglers have taken back out to the Delaware River and Lehigh River. A couple Largemouth Bass have been caught on the Lehigh River near City Park Island, but most anglers have reported catching Chain Pickerel. Panfish, such as bluegills and pumpkinseeds, are always a great opportunity to get youth out. Caution should still be exercised for any boating or river trip, as conditions can change drastically over just a couple days. Lastly, please monitor the PFBC website as there is a great $1, Labor Day only license available, view the website for details.
