Due to the weather this week, many reports were hard to come by with the lack of anglers fishing. From what I did hear this week, there was some decent action for the anglers that got out. Here is what your local shops had to say for the week.
Long Island Fishing Report
Hudson Park Bait and Tackle reports, they have seen blues move in and out of the area frequently over this past week. Anglers are catching most of these fish on diamond jigs. The porgy fishing has remained strong and out deeper in the sound the fluke fishing has picked up. Most of the big fish are being caught in about 70 feet of water. New for this week have been the weakfish, that have started to be caught with some decent size to them.
Stella Maris Bait and Tackle reports, things have been somewhat slow this week with the storms. However, the anglers that did get out are still catching a ton of porgies. The cocktail blues have moved into local waters in greater numbers now. Though these fish aren’t huge yet, they can be a lot of fun on light tackle.
Great Kills Bait and Tackle reports, the weakfish have showed up in Great Kills Harbor. There are also schoolie bass and cocktail blues attacking the pods of peanut bunker. Fluke fishing the said has remained steady these last few weeks.
River Bay Outfitters reports, the inlets are alive with cocktail blues and Spanish mackerel. Paul said the bay and inlets are loaded with silversides attracting many predators. His customer was down at Jones Inlet this week and caught a big Spanish mackerel, along with some small albies. On the freshwater side of things, another customer named Breezy Point Joe fished the Connetquot this week and had a great day with the trout. There have been a lot of big fish caught in the river lately and the local ponds should be stocked with fish in the next couple of weeks.
Captree Bait and Tackle reports, there was a bluefish blitz off one of the local beaches this week. Many of the fish were between 3-5 pounds. Right before the storm of last weekend, they also heard of a striper blitz, with many of the fish being schoolie size. They reported, there are a lot of Bonita and Spanish mackerel around. Off the local piers, anglers are still catching blowfish and the kingfish have started to show up in greater numbers.
Bay Park Fishing Station reports, last Thursday Lloyd Malsin in the boat the Nansen II. Ran off 28 miles in most beautiful conditions and put out a four-rod spread for shark. Had small mahi around the boat and had 3 bites landing and releasing an undersized mako. Many boats trolling around us had mahi and albies with some mahi over 30-pound reported. Water temps still 78 degrees out there. Great crew and great times.
Rick from Harbor Marina of East Hampton said, this week started off with a bang as the first Nor’easter of the season hit Eastern Long Island. True to form striped bass were pushed in shore along both sides of the South Fork. Most fish were schoolie size in the 22- to 26-inch range. Hopefully, these fish will make to breeding size and continue to re-build our currently depleted striper stocks. For the most part mature striped bass are not leaving the deeper ledges and abundant forage found there to feed in-shore during our coastal storms. Three Mile Harbor continues to have an abundance of bait fish including Atlantic Silversides, Bay Anchovies, and Peanut Bunker. Snappers, Cocktail Blues, and Schoolie Stripers are all taking advantage of this bounty. This is a great light tackle fishery from the shoreline or from small crafts. We have yet to see the fall favorite, False Albacore, in Gardiners Bay, but He expects to hear screaming drags or local reports any day now. Fluking has all but petered out in Gardiners Bay, but seabass fishing continues to be strong on the deeper pieces of structure and ledges. Porgies are also abundant in all the usual places. Enjoy the fall bounty and watch the weather reports. It is great to have the option of surfcasting during storms, and fishing deeper waters when things lay out.
White Water Outfitters reports, despite the conditions, anglers are catching schoolie striped bass in the inlets and bay. Most of these fish are feeding on bay anchovies. Blue fish from the 1-5lb range are also in the bay and it seems the larger ones are feeding on the peanut bunker. Small Bonita and albies have been mixed in with these fish as well.
Westlake Marina reports, things have been slow this past week out in Montauk. Besides the surf anglers fishing around the lighthouse during the storm. Hopefully after the water calms down after the hurricane, anglers will be able to get back out on the water and get into some fish.
Miller Place Bait and Tackle reports not much has been happening this past week due to the weather. The only action that remains consistent has been the porgy fishing
Fishing Forecast for Long Island
Heading out this weekend on the boat for most of the shore and all the way to Montauk is going to be tough due to hurricane Florence. The huge hurricane will be bringing swells as big as 9 feet the next few days. Sunday it looks like things will start to improve, but the ocean swells will still be around 4 feet. The best if you are looking for some action, will be to head to the north shore. Porgy fishing remains good on the north shore and there are a lot of bluefish around. Also, don’t overlook the freshwater scene for this weekend. Anglers have reported catching big trout in the Connetquot and as in week passed the local ponds have been fishing decent as well. Good luck to everyone fishing this weekend and tight lines!
