Porgy fishing remained the best action for most of the island this past week. However, if you are in Montauk, it seems the striped bass fishing has been amazing. Though fluke fishing season is almost over, in deeper water anglers are still catching some nice fish. Albies seem to have started to make a push both in Montauk and parts of the south shore. The local wrecks are still holding jumbo sized seabass. Here is what your local shops, marinas, and head boats had to say for the week.
Long Island Fishing Report
Hudson Park Bait and Tackle reports, they have seen blues move in and out of the area frequently over this past week. These fish are chasing peanut bunker, that seem to be all over the place. Anglers are catching most of these fish on diamond jigs. The porgy fishing has remained strong over the last week.
Stella Maris Bait and Tackle reports, that there have been mahi, Bonita, and albies not too far off shore. Porgies are still on fire and the fishing continues to be great. There have still been some fluke around, even with the change in temperature. Seabass fishing has also picked up as of late.
Michaels Bait and Tackle in Staten Island reports, the fluke have moved inshore and are close to the Great Kills Harbor. Porgy fishing seems to be best right now. Many boats are still limiting out on the porgies. They have also seen some weakfish and blues move into the area as of late.
Captree Bait and Tackle reports, there are still fluke in the area over the past week. Cocktail blues and weakfish are also being taken from the boats. Off the piers and let’s at catching blowfish and kingfish. On the local structure the porgy fishing remains good as well.
White Water Outfitters reports, the albies are around, but the action has been spotty. There are some fish around, just not in giant numbers yet. The striped bass action has been picking up by the day with many fish in the 26- to 36-inch range being caught. They have heard of a big school of larger striped bass to the east and they are hopeful these fish will move west soon. In the Peconic, porgy fishing is good along with schoolie bass, cocktail blues, and weakfish.
Bay Park Fishing Station reports, that Lloyd Malsin on the Nansea fished Sunday. He went west of breezy and chummed up nonstop porgy action with small bluefish. Tried 3 drops for fluke with only action in Ambrose channel. No keepers great to be out again
Rick from Harbor Marina of East Hampton reports, sea bass and porgy fishing remain strong in the deeper structural areas of Eastern Long Island. Bluefishing has been sporadic, with fish sometimes found on the large bunker pods scattered about, in the Peconics, Gardiners Bay, and the Eastern Long Island Sound. The peanut bunker that were so abundant just a week ago have all but vanished from 3 Mile Harbor and other local waters. Fortunately, the bay Anchovies and Silversides are keeping the attention of small bluefish and some schoolie stripers. Striper fishing along the Fishers Island Chain and Montauk has been very hit or miss with some days being red hot and other days you cannot get anything going. Hopefully, we will start to see a more consistent fishery setting up as water temperatures start to cool off. Rick has been wondering where the albies are, after two very strong fall runs, they have all but vanished from the light tackle scene this year he said. A few Albies were reported caught in rough seas off Montauk on Wednesday. Hopefully this is the start of something good. He also mentioned, if the weather cooperates this weekend, get out on the water, as things seem to be changing from day to day.
Westlake Marina in Montauk reports, things have lit up over the past week. Big striped bass have started to feed, with many fish being in the 30lb range. These bass are being caught during the day on diamond jigs and then at night on live eels. Fluke fishing is decent, with fish as big as 9lbs hitting the dock this week. The seabass fishing David said has been nothing short of phenomenal. Cod fishing has also been good over the week, with the biggest fish being 20lbs. The sharks are still around, with a few thresher sharks being weighed in.
Miller Place Bait and Tackle reports, they are still picking up porgies in the Cranes Neck and Old Field area. Some sea bass have been mixing in with the porgies. Around buoy 7 anglers reported catching schoolie bass and cocktail blues.
Terminal Tackle reports, most of his anglers are staying inside the harbor and catching both porgies and snappers this past week. Also, there has been a good push of schoolie bass in the local waters as well.
The Celtic Quest reports, the porgy and seabass action has been great this week. The have day trips out of Port Jefferson saw both big porgies and seabass and even some tog, which is a great sign for the upcoming season. Check out the videos on the website to see just how well fishing has been.
River Bay Outfitters reports, there is a ton of bait in the local inlets with small albies and cocktail blues chasing it. Inside the bay, anglers are still catching fluke though a lot are small. Paul said if you are still trying to catch some fluke to head to deeper water. Muller have also showed up in the bay and wouldn’t be surprised if there were some bass on them soon, if there isn’t some already.
Gone Fishing Marina reports, the striped bass action has been good. There have been many fish in the 30-40lb range. They have also had smaller bass right around the dock at the marina, feeding on peanut bunker. These fish once again are being caught on both diamond jigs and live eels. They have heard their first report of albies yesterday outside of the inlet. They have also had some big bluefish hit the scales this week, with the largest coming in at 15 pounds.
Fishing Forecast for Long Island
With the cooler weather temperatures, the fall run should really start to heat up in the next week or two. Montauk seems like your best bet for the weekend for whatever type of fish you are wanting to target. If you do not want to take the trip out, your local waters are also holding decent fish. I would look to fish some of the back bays and inlets. With all the bait that has been around there are sure to be some hungry predators out there as well. Porgy and seabass action for the boat anglers should continue to fish well. Make sure wherever you are fishing to bring some skinny metals Incase the albies show up. They can pop up at any time and you don’t want to miss out on the action. Good luck everyone and tight lines!

I was in the Rockaways on Sunday. Tons of bait around. Small stripers and blues are pretty close in the surf, but haven’t landed any keepers. Going away for a week, but will be back and plan to hit it hard once this rain passes.
