Albies seem to be the name of the game this week. Reports from Brooklyn to Montauk of these speedsters. Did get a few good reports of striped bass again out in Montauk. Seabass and porgy fishing, which has been great for what seems like month now remains hot just about everywhere around the island. Here is what your local shops and marinas had to say for this week.
Hudson Park Bait and Tackle reports, that blackfish season is off to a great start today with already a 9-pounder weighed in at the shop. They have also heard and seen some 8s and 7s caught also. Mostly all the fish are being caught on jigs on either Asian or green crabs. The surprise catch on one of the tidal tail jigs was a 60-pound black drum that took the jig and crab. The angler thought he had a blackfish of a life time, but was still happy catching a huge drum. There are still cocktail blues around and anglers are hoping the bigger ones show up soon. Porgy and seabass fishing remain great on all the local structure.
Stella Maris Bait and Tackle reports, albies have really moved in strong over this past week. Both anglers from boat and shore have been getting into the action. Porgy fishing has remained very good, with some nice trigger fish mixed in.
Bay Park Fishing Station received a report from the Nansea, that they had a great day fishing, with one of their catches an Atlantic Halibut weighing in at 18.4 pounds by angler Alex Berman.
River Bay Outfitters reports, the albies invaded Jones inlet yesterday. A regular at the shop sent pictures to Paul and said both the boat and shore anglers were into fish. There has also been reports of small blues and shad in the inlets and on the ocean beaches.
White Water Outfitters reported, the striped bass bite has really started to pick up locally over the past week. They also said the striped bass bite is still good out in Montauk with the boat anglers using diamond jigs mainly to catch fish. The albie fishing has also been very good out in Montauk. The albies have shown up closer to the shop both in the inlet and in the ocean. The porgy and seabass bite on the wrecks remains good as well. They are gearing up for blackfish season which opens on the south shore in a couple of days. They have green crabs and pretty much everything else you need to catch some fish.
Westlake Marina reports, the Albie fishing has been red hot around Montauk. Though many fish have come from the boats, the anglers surf fishing have been getting as chance at them too. Striped bass fishing has been good on the boats with anglers using eels and diamond jigs. The porgy and sea bass fishing has continued to do well. Two big thresher sharks were weighed in this week. The first was caught on the boat the Bloodline and weighed in at 345lbs. The second was weighing in at 352lbs was caught on the boat the Susie E II. The marina is also geared up for blackfish season with green crabs. They will have white crabs and hermits, but make sure to call first to order them.
Montauk Marine Basin reports, the striped bass action has been very good with anglers using live eels. Albie fishing has been very good all over Montauk it seems. Porgy and seabass fishing is still doing very well on all the wrecks and structure. Offshore, many anglers have been catching mahi.
Miller Place Bait and Tackle reported, porgies and seabass fishing is very good. Mixed in with these fish have been some cocktail blues. Striped bass fishing has been decent, nothing to big yet, but still a good amount of fish. Albies have been showing up in good numbers as well.
Terminal Tackle reports, they have seen an increase in bluefish lately. Though not large size fish, there are a lot of them. Porgy fishing is good numbers wise, but it seems they are starting to get smaller. They are excited that blackfish season has opened and thinks it will be a great fall for them on the north shore.
Fishing Forecast for Long Island
The marine forecast is not looking too great for the next few days due the hurricane coming up the coast. Once things start to calm down though, the fall run should really get into gear. Cooler temperatures are starting to come this way, which means these warm water temps will finally drop. Striped bass should be on the move from the north and we should see more reports of them next week both on the south and north shore. Blackfishing will be open for everyone by the next time I write a report for you guys. The early reports so far from the sound have been good. I would think once the south shore opens, the inshore waters should be good as well. Albies should be around for the next few weeks, so if you haven’t already, make sure you get out and target these fish. They can be some of the best pound for pound fighters we have locally. I hope everyone has a great weekend and hopefully oh can get out on the water!
