Legal Reminder: Remember! From November 1st through April 30th there is mandatory wear for life jackets from on boats less than 16 feet in length and all canoes and kayaks. Wearing your life jacket is the best way to prevent a boating fatality and we recommend you wear one all year, not just during the mandatory wear period. Also, a sound producing device is required on all canoes and kayaks. A launch permit or unpowered registration is required areas if a state access is utilized to launch or retrieve a kayak or canoe.
Northern Wayne County
The cooler temperatures of Fall have arrived, and anglers have reported some positive activity at Long Pond and Prompton Dam. Crappie, smallmouth bass and an occasional walleye are active and hitting jigs, crank baits and live bait (medium and large shiners) fished slow and deep. Trout continue to hit paste bait, slow trolled flies and live bait at Upper Woods Pond.
Northern Susquehanna County
Quaker Lake is producing some fine catches of trout and bass. Try using live bait and paste bait.
Eastern Bradford County
Channel catfish continue to hit stink baits and chicken liver. Make sure to fish on the bottom when targeting catfish.
Southern Luzerne & Columbia Counties
With the fall plantings of trout completed in the district, anglers are having little trouble finding success at Lake Irena, Lily Lake and Briar Creek Lake. The best bait seems to be whatever you can place on a hook. Expect that to change however, as water temperatures drop, and fish scatter, settling into their new environments.
FEW Reservoir has been yielding some fine panfish activity. Especially in the Lehigh River arm of the reservoir. Now is the time for some of the year’s most exciting, as well as scenic angling. Savvy anglers would do well to fish throughout the day, attempting to match the local forage.
Don’t overlook the local trout streams either. You likely will not catch a limit out of one hole, but if you are willing to locate the fish, you would do well. Best bet would be the DHALO section of the Nescopeck Creek and Fishing Creek. But, you will catch fish on the others if you put the time in.
The Susquehanna River has not been at fishable levels consistently, as we receive downpours and it returns to being high and muddy. Hopefully, the rain is behind us, and anglers can do well as fish begin to go into the fall feeding patterns.
Northern Pike and Southern Wayne Counties
Most of the streams in the district are running fast and high due the continuing rainfall that the area has been having. The lakes have been doing well for bass, pickerel, and panfish. The stripers and walleye in Lake Wallenpaupack are starting to become active as the water temps get colder. They are being caught on live bait in 15 to 20 feet of water. The crappie in Shohola Lake and Greeley Lake are starting to become more active and anglers are using white to light colored jigs.
Wyoming and Northern Luzerne Counties
Area fishing opportunities have been bolstered recently by Autumn Stockings of Adult Trout. Bowman’s Creek Catch and Release Section, Harveys Lake, Harveys Creek (including the Keystone Select Section), Sylvan Lake, Moon Lake and Lake Took-A-While have all received fish from our hatcheries. And they are some really nice fish! It’s a great time of year to get out there and stave off the impending cold weather. Just be aware that you are sharing some of these areas with hunters and wear bright colors (preferably orange) especially if you are moving through heavily wooded areas to get to your destination.
There have been reports of the bass fishing improving at Harveys Lake as the boat traffic is no longer having an impact on the fish and water temperatures have been dropping. Working soft plastics of the points, near depth changes and other bottom structure has been the ticket for smallmouth bass. Working those same plastics closer to shore around docks and wacky seems to be working on largemouth bass where you can find them.
