Cape Cod Fishing Report- January 24, 2019

Fishing Cape Cod in January isn't getting any easier.

Fishing Cape Cod in January isn’t getting any easier. Anglers had a brief few days where there was enough ice to be somewhat confident on. Those few did find luck with trout and pickerel on hard water. The holdovers are becoming harder and harder to find it seems. With no shops having heard of any being caught, most anglers seem to be looking to the thin layers of ice on the ponds.

Fishing Report for Cape Cod

Canal Bait and Tackle reported there have been a few guys out on the ice during the cold spell but other than that no news of fish.

Red Top Sporting Goods has heard of some nice pickerel being caught through the ice but with the recent jump in temperature and rain most of the spots are unfishable now. A few anglers even ventured out on only partially frozen ponds and landed some trout as well.

James at Sports Port Bait and Tackle reported selling some shiners to anglers looking to ice fish. But has not heard of anyone hooking up either through the ice or in the brackish rivers targeting holdovers.

Eastmans Sport and Tackle heard of a few anglers even ventured out on only partially frozen ponds and landed some trout through the ice but overall not much news of fish being caught.

Fishing Forecast for Cape Cod

With the heavy rain and warmer temperatures what ice we may have left is extremely unpredictable. You may find 4-6 inches around the banks but the thickness can change rapidly. Be very cautious when heading out, ice is not safe right now. Holdovers are still around, but it will take a lot of time and even more patience to hook up. The best bet for fishing is to start the open water search. There should be plenty with the heavy warm rains.
