Pennsylvania Fishing Report – January 3, 2019

Warm weather and rain melted most ice on lakes across the state. Trout anglers are swinging streamers across shallows and finding a good bite.

Northwest Region

Forest County

Allegheny River

Anglers are catching Walleye and Muskellunge from the shore and from boats. Anglers can also access the Sand and Gravel Island from the parking area near the Lighthouse and walk to the Allegheny River or Tionesta Creek.

Tionesta Outflow

Anglers have been successful fishing from the wall for yellow perch, walleye and musky. Anglers are reminded that they must have purchased a trout permit to fish in the Tionesta Outflow, regardless of fishing for or keeping trout.

Northcentral Region

HUNTERS, ANGLERS and BOATERS IMPORTANT REMINDER – MANDATORY COLD WEATHER LIFE JACKET WEAR – November 1 – April 30th – Everyone on a boat less than 16 feet in length and all canoes and kayaks are REQUIRED to properly wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket.

Potter County

Warm weather and rain melted any ice that was on lakes across the County. Anglers are catching trout on small streams across the County. The best time of day seems to be mid-day.

A few anglers are targeting musky and Walleye with some success.

Synder, Union, Montour, Northumberland Counties

Susquehanna River

When the water level and weather cooperate, anglers are catching Walleye.

REMINDER – Anglers are reminded to renew their fishing license for 2019.

Clinton County

Fishing Creek

Water is up and off color. The water temperature is in the low 40s.

Anglers are catching trout using streamers. Try swinging streamers across shallow areas, along the stream edge and the tail-out of pools. Streamer patterns that are currently working are size #4-8 and colors olive or black. Don’t be afraid to throw a chartreuse streamer.

Anglers are also catching trout using nymph patterns. Patterns that are working include flashback pheasant tail #14-18; pats rubberlegs #8-12; frenchie #14-18 and brown/black stonefly patterns #8-12. Fish nymphs deep, targeting deep pools and soft edges of the pools.

Centre County

Spring Creek

Spring Creek is still up and off color. The stream temperature is holding in the low 40s.

Anglers are catching trout using scuds and small nymphs on the bottom.

Patterns that are working include – squirmy wormies #12; hares ear #12-16; flashback pheasant tail nymph #14-18; brown/black stonfly nymphs #8-12).

Olive, white, and/or black streamers (#4-8) are also working.

Northeastern Region

On Saturday, February 2, 2019, A Pocono Country Place, Monroe County, will be hosting a Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission Fishing Skills Instructor (FSI) workshop. This workshop is designed to teach adult leaders how to teach our youth basic fishing skills and aquatic ecology. Southeastern Region

Many waters in the Southeast Region remain free of ice. The considerable rainfall over the past few days have most of the creeks and rivers running high and muddy. Work lures low and slow to find fish.
