Cape Cod Fishing Report- February 7, 2019

Another challenging and quiet week on the cape. With suspect ice and barely any open water, the window for fishing continued to be short. However, it seems mother nature may finally be giving us a break. With a taste of spring, melting nearly all ice, open water is now possible. I was able to find some jumbo white perch and finally feel optimistic.

Fishing Report for Cape Cod

Sports Port Bait and Tackle reported selling some shiners to anglers, not for ice fishing, but for open water. No reports back of fish caught but wouldn’t be surprised if they found luck with some pickerel or bass getting active with this winter thaw.

Canal Bait and Tackle also reported hearing of the occasional angler having luck in open water. Seems most aren’t risking walking out on the ice.

Fishing Forecast for Cape Cod

Don’t get too excited with the warm weather and open water. I know it feels like spring, but I promise, skim ice and cold weather is on its way back. I would get out now and fish the open water while you can. Small spoons, spinners, and shiners would be my recommendation to hook up. The warm weather and rain may have woken some fish up a bit from their dormant winter behavior.

You’ll notice I mentioned nothing of holdovers…if you’ve landed one on the cape we would love to hear about it!
