Valentine’s Catch of the Day!

Valentine’s Day largemouth bass
On Valentine’s Day WCO Lauer was on patrol at a lake in Tioga County. He had the pleasure of speaking with several ice angler couples who were celebrating Valentine’s day by ice fishing together! One couple, Amy and Joe Dawson, were sharing fishing stories and why they chose to head out ice fishing on Valentine’s Day, when one of Amy’s tip-up flags went up…moments later she pulled an amazing Large Mouth Bass out from the ice. She and Joe were ecstatic with the catch and wanted to share the moment with our officer. Here is Amy proudly sharing her story with WCO Lauer. Way to go Amy and Joe and THANK you for sharing your story with PFBC!

Tioga County

Hills Creek Lake

Anglers are catching Bluegill and Crappie near the stumps, in 5-8 feet of water. Chartruese, green, black, silver and gold at the “lucky” colors. Jigs tipped with waxworms are working well for Crappie. Fathead minnows are also working well. Anglers are also catching Crappie, using green and black plastics.

Anglers are catching bass and pickerel, using shiners and fathead minnows under tip-ups, in similar areas. A few anglers are also catching Yellow Perch near the stumps and in deep water toward the dam.

Beechwood Lake

A few anglers are catching Yellow Perch, trout and a couple Crappie. Anglers are also catching bass and pickerel using minnows.

Centre County

Foster Joseph Sayers Lake

Anglers are back on the ice at Hunter Run Cut. Anglers are catching panfish using jigs, plastics and minnows.

NOTE – Anglers are reminded to always check ice conditions, prior to venturing out on the ice.

Spring Creek

Spring Creek is in good shape for some winter trout fishing. With new snow and predicted rain, snow melt may slow down the bite, but trout are eating. The water temperature is in the mid 40s.

Anglers are catching trout using the following nymph patterns- micro mopflies, squirmy wormies #12; walt’s worm #12-16; olive scuds #14-18.

Anglers using Olive or black streamer patterns are also catching trout. Sizes #6-10 are working best. A few anglers are catching trout using streamers with some flash too.

Clinton County

Fishing Creek

The water level is up from snow melt, but has good color. The water temperature is in the low 40s. Trout are still holding tight to the bottom. With new snow and rain on the way, snow melt will keep the trout holding tight to the bottom. Be prepared to spend time in the deeper holes.

Anglers are catching trout using small, streamer patterns with flash (e.g. sparkle minnow or similar patterns).

Nymphs are working too. Bring some of the usual nymph patterns, but the occasional mopfly will work too. Patterns that are currently working include – Flashback pheasant tail nymph #14-18; Frenchie #14-18; black stoneflies #8-12.
