Cape Cod Fishing Report - October 10, 2019

Anthony DeiCicchi caught this bonus Spanish mackerel along the Elizabeth Islands on Tuesday.

Wet and windy sums up the fishing on Cape Cod right now. Lucky for us, we have a three day weekend ahead, and the weather is set to clear by Sunday.

Cape Cod Fishing Report

Tog fishing fired up before the storm, reported Evan at Eastman’s Sport and Tackle. Buzzards Bay and the Elizabeth Islands had anglers catching good numbers of keepers early in the week. Maco’s Bait and Tackle also reported on the improved tog fishing.

The storm has dirtied the water in the Canal a bit, but Jeff at Canal Bait And Tackle said the winds have brought stripers into the East End. The challenge is getting a cast to them through the fierce winds. I had the same problem in the West End this morning, except the fish I was casting to appeared to be albies and bonito. AJ at Red Top Sporting Goods reported other fishermen seeing albies in the western half of the Canal on Thursday morning. AJ said a push of fish moved through the Canal last week, but he thinks there’s a bigger push still to come. Jeff said the northeast winds have already blown mackerel, sea herring, and bunker into the Canal, and with the winds staying that way for another day or so, even more bait could get bottlenecked into the Big Ditch.  This bodes well for the post-storm fishing, which just so happens to coincide with the full moon. This could be good.

Fishermen on the Vineyard are hoping the storm shakes up the slow fishing over there. Bluefish have been scarce in recent days, said Peter at Larry’s Tackle, but stripers are around for the fishermen willing to grind it out. He’d heard of bass into the 20-pound class this week.

Striper fishing was good across the sound, on the Cape’s South Side, said Evan at Eastmans, who heard of a 45-incher taken inside one of the salt ponds on an eel this week.  He’d also heard of 30-inch fish along the South Side beaches, and a 35-pounder taken by a boat fisherman off the Elizabeths. Bluefish are still around as well, especially in Buzzards Bay.

Bluefish to 17 pounds have been caught by trolling off Sandy Neck in Cape Cod Bay reported Shawn at Sports Port. Even in these recent lean years for big bluefish, we’ve been able to count on some good action for them in the fall. Perhaps we’ll see that following the storm. Find adult bunker, and I bet you’ll find the big blues.

Trout fishing has been excellent since the recent stocking. Shawn from Sports Port recommended Kastmaster spoons, as they have been producing the best for him, although he’s also been catching on spinners and PowerBait.

Fishing Forecast for Cape Cod

Be safe if you plan on fishing in the wind the next couple days. I’ve heard rumors that even some of the ponds have small craft advisories!

I’m pretty excited about the fishing potential after this storm, with the full moon. Just about anywhere on the Cape could hold good striper fishing, so don’t rule anywhere out. And you never know what a big wind like this could blow in. Sea herring could ignite some wild blitzes along the backside, in Cape Cod Bay, or in the Canal. Plus, the albies are still here, though dirty water could push them out and away from the Cape for the fall.  We’ll just have to see what happens after the winds die down.
