Connecticut and Rhode Island Fishing Report - February 13, 2020

Cod fishing has not been consistent this season, but you never know: if the weather cooperates the next trip could be a good one.

Above: Cod fishing has not been consistent this season, but you never know if the next trip could be a good one. These fish were caught aboard the Frances Fleet last weekend.

Connecticut & Rhode Island Fishing Report – 2/13/2020 Update:
The Frances Fleet in Narragansett reported a tough grinds on the grounds this week. With fresh bait and high hopes, they steamed out to the grounds and started cracking clams. They managed to pick a few keepers but that was about it. The wind from the recent weather stirred up the water to a nice brown color. Once things calm down and the water settles the fishing action should rebound. With heavy southwest winds trips have been canceled but there is hope for better conditions towards the end of this week.

Connecticut & Rhode Island Fishing Report – 2/6/2020 Update: The Frances Fleet in Narragansett had good cod fishing last Saturday. Captain Mike reported a good pick all day long with both jigs and bait working. Biggest fish on the day was in the mid teens. On Sunday and Monday, the swell made the fishing tough, and weather has kept them off the cod grounds since then. The next trip could be a wide-open bite, but if you’re not out there, you’ll miss it. Heather from Black Hawk Sportfishing out of Niantic reported that the fishing this week just was not what they wanted it to be. On Friday, they had some excellent weather and they picked away and put some nice fish in the coolers but still it wasn’t what they had anticipated. They are hoping for improvement in the near future, but in the meantime, they’re getting ready for our next round of sports shows.

Connecticut & Rhode Island Fishing Report – 1/30/2020 Update: Up and down, freeze and thaw…it’s been a mixed bag for fishermen with fishable ice in the northwest part of Connecticut and (mostly) open water through the rest of southern New England. I chatted with Josh at Three Belles Outfitters in Niantic and he said that he’s looking forward to warmer weather ahead expanding open water opportunities. While he has been doing some open-water crappie and perch fishing, some of the coves on the Connecticut River remain locked under an inch (or less) of ice. Cod fishing has improved over the past week.  The Frances Fleet in Narragansett had 35 keepers into the low teens last Friday and will be sailing through the weekend. Black Hawk Sportfishing out of Niantic is also sailing Friday and Saturday. Hop aboard and come home with some fresh fish fillets!

Connecticut & Rhode Island Fishing Report – 1/23/2020 Update: Cold weather is expanding the ice-fishing opportunities, while light winds are allowing headboats to hit the cod grounds. Unfortunately, the cod bite has not been consistent.  The Frances Fleet in Narragansett has been taking advantage of the sea conditions and getting out daily for cod. Unfortunately, the bite has been off. On Wednesday they marked a lot of fish but could not get a consistent bite going. Black Hawk Sportfishing out of Niantic had a similar report – lots of fish and bait marked, but a tough grind. Hopefully, the bite will turn on for Friday’s 4am trip.
