New Jersey Fishing Report - February 20, 2020

Above: Norma K III reported decent tog fishing over the weekend, with fish to nearly 10 pounds.

We’re in the waning days of blackfish season before they go off-limits for the month of March. Boats are still catching though, with the Norma K III recording pool-winners of nearly 10 pounds over the long weekend.

There’s been rumors of some schoolies still roaming the beaches. But, with the mild winter, some striper action in the backwaters should be a lock when they reopen on  March 1. Winter flounder opens the same day, and there’s a good chance, they’ll be biting early as well.

In freshwater, bass and pickerel have been feeding well throughout this mild winter, and fishermen are enjoying good action with both species. Some fishermen are trying for walleye on the Delaware and others are looking for trout in places like Ken Lockwood Gorge.

Fishing Forecast for New Jersey
Hopping on a headboat for tog or ling would be a good option for securing a fresh fish dinner. If you’re fishing on your own boat, look deeper for tog, as they head farther offshore as the water cools and the winter wears on, though the better bet would be packing clams instead of crabs and seeking out ling.
