Pennsylvania Fishing Report – April 16, 2020

Although creeks and rivers are flowing above average, the water is clear and anglers are finding good numbers of hungry trout and musky.

NOTE ON EFFECTS OF COVID-19 ON 2020 TROUT STOCKING AND MORE Trout stocking will be conducted on an accelerated schedule. To ensure public safety, volunteers will NOT be permitted to assist with stocking activities.

Clarion County

Kahle Lake

Anglers are catching some Bluegill, Yellow Perch, and a few crappies.

Piney Dam and the Upper Clarion River

Anglers are catching some Yellow Perch and a few crappies.

Lower Clarion River

Anglers are catching some nice Muskellunge, Northern Pike, and Walleye near the confluence with the Allegheny River.

Allegheny River

Anglers are catching some nice Smallmouth Bass and a few Walleye between Emlenton and Parker.

Redbank Creek

Anglers are catching some nice Muskellunge and Northern Pike near the confluence with the Allegheny River.

Piney Creek Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only Area

Anglers are catching lots of trout here on a variety of flies.

Forest County

Allegheny River

Anglers are catching muskellunge and northern pike in the Tionesta Sand and Gravel pool from shore and from a boat.

Tionesta Lake

While the Tionesta Lake Complex is closed due to COVID-19, the boat launch and lake remain open to fishing and boating activity. If you do engage in fishing and boating activity, please be mindful of the social distancing recommendations of the CDC.

Ross Run

The Ross Run Children’s Fishing Derby scheduled for April 19, 2020 has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

Tionesta Outflow

The Tionesta Outflow Area is closed due to COVID-19, however, anglers can park outside the barrier and walk into the Outflow Area to fish. Boaters are reminded that motorboats are not permitted upstream of the County Bridge.

Toms Run

While the facilities at Cook Forest State Park are closed due to COVID-19, anglers are permitted to fish within the State Park.

Mercer County

Lake Wilhelm

Tioga County

Asaph Run

Anglers are catching Trout throughout the stream. Anglers are reporting having success near the campground using pink and chartreuse paste baits. Live bait is also working well right now.

Lycoming County

Pine Creek

The water temperature is currently in the low 40’s. The creek is flowing above average however, the water is clear. Anglers are reporting success using blue-winged olive emergers as well as, egg patterns. Live bait and artificial lures are also working well right now.

Clinton County

Fishing Creek

Currently, the temperature is in the high 40’s. Hendrickson’s, caddis, and blue-winged olives are all hatching right now. Flows are above average but still good for fishing with Trout rising as well as taking nymphs. Nymphing stonefly and caddis larvae imitations in slower moving pockets continues to be most productive technique. Streamers are also working well right now to entice aggressive fish.

Centre County

Spring Creek

The water temperature is currently in the low 50’s. The creek is flowing slightly above average and has some color to it. Nymphing egg patterns and caddis imitations is working well in slower pockets and tail outs right now. Blue-winged olives and caddis continue to hatch and dry flies will produce fish, especially when the conditions are overcast.

Southeastern Region

Southern Bucks County

And so, the trout season begins!  Although this year has been a non-traditional opener, many anglers have been successful so far.  All over Bucks County, anglers were reeling trout in with yellow and rainbow paste baits, as well as spinners, along the Delaware Canal and Neshaminy Creek at Tyler State Park

Chester County

The Crappie bite is on. There are numerous Crappies starting to come out of Struble Lake and Chambers Lake. There have been 15+ inch Crappies at Octoraro Reservoir and Chambers in past years. Use “crappie jigs” or small minnows fished 3 -5 feet under a pencil bobber. Boat anglers are doing better because they are better able to find the structure and locate schools.

The Middle Branch White Clay Creek, Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only, Keystone Select Trout Waters is full of brood-size trout, with some up to the 6-7 lb. range. The stocked section is a 1.7 mile stretch that runs from Good Hope Road at 39 45′ 43.7″ North, 75 47′ 03.9″ West to the confluence with the East Branch White Clay in the White Clay Creek Preserve at 39 44′ 57.7″ North, 75 46′ 10.4″ West. After stocking was completed, our Waterways Conservation Officers caught numerous anglers fishing with bait attempting to catch these trophy-sized fish. Make sure you follow the Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Regulations.
