Cape Cod Fishing Report
Peter, at Larrys Tackle Shop in Edgartown, says holdover striper fishing is steady, with fish up to 42 inches. He hit a pond the other day and landed keeper-sized holdovers around 28 inches in length. The ponds have been stocked with trout by Mass. Fish and Wildlife. Peter hasn’t received any reports of fresh stripers, tog, or squid just yet, but he’s expecting to hear some good news soon. The tackle shop is running two contests: the first person to catch a migrating striper from the Vineyard, and a second contest to see who can guess when the first migrating striper will be caught. You can make a prediction on their Facebook page.
Billy, at Macos Bait and Tackle, says there isn’t much happening locally on the Cape. People are trying to catch tog, but there haven’t been any reports.
Derek, at Red Top Sporting Goods, says the largemouth bite has been strong on the Upper Cape. Derek has a friend who picked off some bass on spinnerbaits at night. They’ve yet to hear reports of tog, cod, haddock, or squid.
Amy, at Sports Bait & Tackle, says trout fishing remains consistent at the Mills. Amy went out with her son and caught a bunch of largemouth at a no-name pond on soft plastics. She hasn’t received any saltwater reports but says the bayside estuaries are providing holdover striper action.
Evan, at Eastman’s Bait and Tackle, says the local ponds on the Upper Cape are producing pickerel, largemouth, and trout. No tog reports.
Cape Cod Forecast
Although I’m not shocked we didn’t receive tog reports, I did have high hopes when I reached out to the local tackle shops on the Cape. From what I’ve gathered over the phone, I think we’ll have our first tog reports by Apr. 15, especially since the extended weather forecast is calling for consistent air temps in the 50s.
The water temperature in Woods Hole is currently 45, several degrees shy of when tog start heading to shore to spawn. Largemouth reports were cold this week, but now is the time to catch a 5+ pounder. Trout action remains strong – check the latest stockings in the link below.
