Cape Cod Fishing Report- March 31, 2022

Trout and largemouth bass keep things interesting while anglers gear up for stripers and togs.

As the weather’s been getting nicer, life has gotten busier and I haven’t fished as much as I’d like to. The Cape’s waters are slowly warming up after a long winter and with the exception of last weeks cold spell, fish have been biting well.

I spent several nights pond hopping with Anthony DeiCicchi and Jimmy Fee for largemouth bass, but the most we’ve been able to reel in are a couple 3-pounders. We’re looking for fish about double that size, but it’s undoubtedly better to get bit during the cold, dark nights than it is getting skunked.

Anthony DeiCicchi prepares to sling a big swimbait in hopes of hooking a bucket mouth bass.

We use jointed swimbaits and wake baits to try and grab the attention of big, hungry bass that can’t pass up a hearty meal. Anthony found success a handful of times, but nothing tipped the scales further than 3.8 lbs.

Trout stocking has commenced and will continue for the rest of the state. Anglers on the Cape have wasted no time heading to popular trout ponds in hopes of a solid bite. I’ve been throwing trout-pattern swimbaits for bass, but I haven’t made much of an effort to target them recently; I’m hoping this weekend will give me the time to do so. Then again, until I catch my biggin’ of the spring I may be stuck on bass ponds catching little guys like this:

Largemouth bass have been biting better for me at night rather than mornings or afternoons.

With warmer weather on the horizon, I’m hoping to even get my kayak back on the water for some smallmouth fishing on the bigger ponds.

Tom at Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzard’s Bay said they are having a massive Spring Sale right now through this Sunday at 5pm. Stop by and grab some gear for this upcoming season while it’s marked down! There’s a variety of discounts, like 15% off plugs and 20% off Soft baits, plus deals on reels, line and much more.

Evan from Eastman’s Sport and Tackle in Falmouth has one or two customers getting on holdovers in local salt ponds each week; that bite will improve as weather warms up. Evan said trout fishing has been productive in Falmouth ponds; he’s had customers catching trout while trolling in the recently stocked kettle lakes. Eastman’s has plenty of small, medium and large shiners in store along with all the trout worms stocked. Stop in this weekend!

Cape Cod Fishing Forecast

Anglers are gearing up for tautog season across the northeast as tackle shops stock up on jigs and crabs. Trout fishing will be peaking over the next couple weeks, with most ponds having received a plentiful stocking by now. Shiners are catching the big fish, but spoons, kastmasters and spinners can be fished well from shore and will also produce fish while trolling. Largemouth bass fishing is going to pick up even more, as herring make their way into the rivers and freshwater ponds over the coming weeks. Smallmouth bass will become an exciting option for kayak anglers, too, as herring move in to spawn and the bass move to shallower water to feed in preparation for their own prespawn. This transitional time of year can bring some of the most exciting fishing to the northeast, especially with striped bass soon to be on their way north.

Matt Haeffner grew up on Long Island, NY, where he fished on party boats, his kayak, and the South Shore & North Fork beaches for bluefish, striped bass, fluke, and more. With a decade of experience as a kayak instructor, fishing retail specialist, and editor, he is well-versed in the tackle and techniques that apply to the Northeast's fisheries. For 12 months a year, he enjoys surfcasting, wading, and kayak fishing on Cape Cod, MA, and beyond.
