Rhode Island Fishing Report

The Frances Fleet in Point Judith couldn’t fish much this past week, due to the strong winds keeping them tied to the dock, but the weather appears to be clearing up for the weekend before we take a turn for the colder once again next week. The spring cod season has produced a mixed results with few good trips and a few that were a bit slower, but they will continue to try and get out to the cod grounds whenever they can. Cod fishing will continue through April and into early May when they might have a chance to start targeting fluke. Reservations continue to be required for cod trips so be sure to book online or call the office before heading to the dock

Dustin, at Rhode Island Kayak Fishing Adventures told me that the Rhode Island opening day was a success for most Rhode Island anglers. Some good numbers of large golden trout were caught this week, along with the usual suspects. Largemouth bass action has also been very good, with some large pre-spawn fish starting to get on the feed. On the saltwater side, Dustin is still seeing strong holdover bass action in Rhode Island and CT, along with a minor improvement in tautog action. We should be just a couple weeks away from steady tautog, striped bass, and squid action in the salt! Dustin is currently booking kayak and shore fishing trips for the 2022 upcoming season, so be sure to book asap at www.rikfa.com.

Dave at Ocean State Tackle in Providence reported success for most anglers on opening day, despite the weather no being ideal. Rainbow, brook, and golden trout have been caught with regularity on Powerbait, small spinners, and Kastmasters. Tautog anglers are starting to see more success on the local reefs and rockpiles, while the white perch bite has remained consistent in the usual early Spring hotspots. Holdover bass are getting more active in the rivers and salt ponds, with anglers catching good numbers on small soft plastics. Dave will be open 5 am – 7 pm seven days a week for the summer season and has all your Rhode Island tackle needs covered.

Rhode Island Fishing Forecast

While the milder temperatures may not last through the whole weekend, it has provided increased water temperatures and some better local fishing. In Rhode Island, we have made it past opening day of trout season and results have remained strong across the state. In the salt, the spring tautog fishing is slowly but steadily improving each week, and while we haven’t seen fresh striped bass yet, there is plenty of holdover action in the estuaries and salt ponds. Connecticut anglers can continue to take advantage of strong striper action in the larger tidal rivers, as the recent influx of herring has caught the attention of the larger holdovers. Shad enthusiasts should find some of their first catches of the season this weekend in the CT River, while trout anglers can continue to take advantage of the improving flows across the state.
