Above: Side Job Charters out of Manasquan reported good canyon fishing last week catching longfin, yellowfin and bigeye all on the troll.
You can describe most of the last week with one, choice four-letter word: WIND. In many parts of the Northeast, the tuna are here and hungry, but anglers have struggled to get at them. A late week weather windows had captains heading long on Friday, while some of the bluefin in New England required a not-so-long run.

New York/New Jersey
The table is set off New Jersey with vast schools of big sand eels. When the tuna find them, they won’t leave, so this has the makings of an epic midshore tuna run. The bigeye fishing in the canyons continues to be good when the boats can reach them, with the most reliable action happening early and late in the day, and big deep divers providing the best results. There’s even been some longfin in the mix at the Hudson. We’ll have to see if this is one of those big years for albacore.
The Hudson looks ready to pop off with some good water rolling in.
The midshore tuna action off Long Island has mostly been a troll bite so far, but we’ll see how things settle in on the back side of this blow.

New England
Captains are finding giant bluefin tuna from Rhode Island to Maine, while recreational-sized fish are popping up at inshore spots around Cape Cod, giving trolling and popping anglers a good shot at fish.
South of Martha’s Vineyard, yellowfin are starting to mix in with the bluefin, and on Friday, boats began heading back out to see how the bite has developed after the blow.
