Maryland & Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report- January 23, 2025

Western Maryland ice anglers are blowing the dust off their gear and hitting Deep Creek Lake for walleye, while in the salt, there's decent tautog action and word of giant bluefin offshore in warmer water.

Maryland & Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report

Sailing out of West Ocean City, Captain Monty Hawkins of Morning Star Fishing shared reports of an improving tog bite earlier this week, with fishing improving daily. With the local tuna bite waning, the Morning Star pushed off this morning for the warmer waters of Poorman’s Canyon where the captain has heard word of of giant bluefin sightings. Be sure to check out the report next week for more on how this trip went.

From Ocean City, Always Bent Fishing OC reported that the epic winter tuna bite has come to an end for their crew, but the Morning Star was headed out to Poorman’s Canyon in search of some straggler bluefin in some warmer water. Bakke said there hasn’t been much ice fishing going on either, although the local bays around OC are half frozen. He’s gone out a couple times looking for stripers but is yet to put together a bite. For the remainder of the winter, and especially once temperatures rise a bit, they’ll be fishing for striped bass in the Chesapeake and Susquehanna River until the spring closure. In the meantime, you can check out their website and YouTube channel for videos, localized reports and more.

Anglers Sport Center Fishing Report – Annapolis, MD

The Anglers Sport Center fishing report is written by Anglers Fishing Manager & OTW Columnist, Alex Gallardo-Perez.

Not much has been going on in the bay since temperatures dropped and most tidal creeks have frozen. The ones that can trailer south and break some ice at the boat ramps have been fishing the Calvert Cliffs Power Plant hot water discharge. Fishing has been hit or miss at the discharge with most anglers catching one or two fish mainly mid size striped bass. Western Maryland anglers are finally able to get out on the ice in Deep Creek Lake with most catching some yellow perch and some walleye. Central Maryland anglers are limited as most public lakes and reservoirs do not allow ice fishing.
