Maryland/Delaware

Boats from the Mid-Atlantic found big numbers of yellowfin in Norfolk, Washington, and Baltimore canyons over the past week. Among them were a few bigeye. White marlin are also beginning to show up in the catches.

New Jersey/New York

The midshore structures off the Northern half of New Jersey and Long Island have loaded up with school bluefin. Boats have been finidng big schools of fish on the surface, where they’re taking poppers, stickbaits, and paddletails. When the fish settle a little deeper, metal jigs are working well.

Some of the early canyon runs for boats out of New York and New England have produced good action on bigeye tuna, suggesting we’re setting up for another strong year for “eyeballs.”

Some swordfish have been caught, including a rare swordfish on the troll for Captain Steve Fernandez. Brendan Victorio also had a great trip to the Canyons departing from Montauk, with yellowfin, bigeye, and a big bluefin.

New England

Off the Cape, there’s been tuna from recreational to giant-sized east of Chatham from Crab Ledge to the Regal Sword. Trolling and casting has been successful. There’s giant tuna feeding on bunker schools in Cape Cod Bay. The fishing on the Cape hasn’t quite broken open yet, but there are some fish around.

There’s a similar story all the way up to Maine, a few fish around, but still on the slow side. Expect to see the action improve on the bluefin every week.

Fishermen hitting the Canyons from New England had similar action as the Montauk boats, with bigeye, big bluefin, and yellowfin in the mix. Captain Larry Backman, out of Falmouth, MA, even caught some bigeye on the jig on a recent trip.
