Fishing with the George Williams skiff has been a great experience but upon arrival of my classic 88’ Mako 171 I have high hopes for the summer. The George Williams was very versatile in the shallows and boulder fields, but it was tough ride once the wind picked up. The Mako will be a smoother ride and allow us to fish further destinations such as the Vineyard and down towards Cuttyhunk.
In the past few weeks we have had our highs and lows. We have been catching large amounts of bass but unfortunately we have missed several big fish. Last week we found ourselves amongst several bass in the rocks on the outskirts of West Falmouth Harbor. I cast a popper into the boulders in hopes for a large bass to come to the surface and that was just the case. The lure hit the water and after my first few pops a big bass smacked the lure and I was on. Before I could settle in and focus on bringing the fish to the boat, the bass spit the hook and was gone. I guess fishing is like a game, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.
As summer approaches the fishing seems to just keep getting better. The Striped Bass and Bluefish are here and they are here to stay. The past few weeks the blues have been in Buzzards Bay in staggering amounts. Keeper stripers are being caught off Nobska Light and Middle Ground consistently. Next week we hope to land some keeper sized bass and chase the large schools of blues. Stay tuned…
