About all I have around here are 25 miles away. I live on the river and only have places like Wal-Mart or Gander Mountain. GM has even stop selling minnows.
my local guy is great… he is very reasonable on price…great service… great knowledge and he has a cold storage box outside he will leave bait in for you if you cant get there before he closes…who else does this? long live the little guy!
couldnt agree with you more…pretty lucky on LI..we have several good ones west and east/north and south. And good owners too !! dont mind an spending extra buck or two when they give you a heads up on a bite or an extra bunker here and there, throw in a bag of ice…fix a tippy tip for nothing…little things when they know your a good customer.
I like going to the local tackle stores in the area that I am fishing. They have the local knowledge of the waters, the bite and what terminal tackle will work for the time of the year.
Case in point…Nelson’s in Provincetown closed last fall after upteen years. His problem may have been the seals and the lack of stripers on the Outer Cape beaches. But as far as I know Blackbeards in Eastham and the Goose Hummock in Orleans are the last two shops on the Outer Cape.
nelsons didnt even sell full size eels, or else i would have swum a few off the back no doubt. im confident i would have caught some quality fish there, seals or not. Backside is such a huge place, its hard to go for 3 or 4 hours, get skunked and start signalling the death of the whole 30 mile area. that said, its not even a popular sport there anymore. all the summer people want to drink and party, and lets face it. young folks would rather download a fishing App on their iphones than actually fish.
Totally agree but I have been getting a little 3 year old and 5 year old girls into fishing and they love it! We can enjoy our passion together!

Hey biff, I’m 15 years old. I don’t download fishing apps or whatsoever. You don’t find kids like me spending time at the Canal for 3 years and not catching fish, in 2015, I caught my first after 3 years of learning about the canal n its conditions. I like partying n stuff but I have an addict for outdoors n fishing. All the south shore kids do is like hu and party n other stuff. So to be honest, I wouldn’t say all young folks would download fishing apps than fish. And your kinda right about the summer people.

I am 20 and I have to say the majority of my friends always ask me to go fishing and when I set up trips they actually fish. There are a few that would rather party but they still fish (that’s what ice fishing is for lol). Fishing is going to make a comeback with our generation it might not have hit yet but wait and see.

You got that right. Sad to loose Nelson’s store. Always had current info.
I’ll tell you one thing. If you want local information, your going to get it at a local shop, not online. And if you want to catch fish, it’s all about information. So if your interested in catching fish, support your local shop and they will supply you with the information you need to be successful.
I tried to go local when I resumed my interest on fishing in E.rockaway LI. All the old local stores I knew as a kid where gone ! I try to stay local when I approach the fishing areas if I can.
Stay Local if you can or the history will die!
I learned to fish years ago on a Penn 704 “greenie”…..my daughter now has my old one and uses it to this day……and we always shop the local tackle shops, even when on vacation and out of the area !
Although I buy a lot of stuff online because of a lack of local tackle shops where I live I always make sure to patronize any independent local shops when I travel. I love those kinds of places and enjoy spending my money there. The service these guys usually offer is well worth it. If you’re lucky enough to have a good shop in your area, be sure to patronize it.
Yeah Penn Reels go as far as the Federated States of Micronesia…great experiences with both spinning and bait casting Penn reels in that part of the world… pacific lagoon.A.M
I’m sorry. I’m guilty of big box shopping. I do shop at the local tackle shops when I’m on a road trip. I’ll make more of an effort to shop at the small local tackle shops in the future
I prefer to spend a little more and support my local shop on Cape Cod. He’s there with advice and help if there’s a problem or a repair and he knows where the fish are. Try getting that on-line.
As for Penn Reels. I have Squidders that go back to the 60’s that still work fine and I recently found a couple from the 70’s (ebay) and they work fine. The Penn Spinners from the 70’s are great reels. I don’t know about the new ones.
While I’m showing my age, I can’t believe the cost of fishing tackle nowadays. $18 plugs! $275 reels! I’ve spent a fair amount of time in the surf years ago and appreciate the advances in some of the new tackle, particularly line, but to outfit yourself with some of the stuff on the shelves today requires a bank loan.
Amen Mike,
Prices are high.
Even though some pricing is better online, I still visit the the local guys too. Value can be measured in different ways. I’m now helping pass the fishing spirit, that I got from my Dad, (and some of my fishing equipment) on to my grand kids.
Thanks!
When the local guys are gone, do you think you will get fresh bait, advice or local reports from the big retailers or online guys? Support your local tackle shop whenever possible.
I shop at three lanterns in Gloucester ,ma, great people and friendly. If they don’t have it they will get for you. I have just ordered a pair of trqs9 by penn and they will set everything up for.
Local shops in the boca area don’t carry all the high end fishing supplies and equipment.

ALL MY REELS ARE PENN’S FOR A REASON!!
the challenge for local shops is trying to compete with the on line and box stores. our challenge is to trying to continue to support local shops.
I use on line retailers to “window shop” then go buy my choices at my local bait and tackle
