Only Patrick Sebile could look at the simple perfection of the bucktail jig and see room for improvement. One of his latest designs for A Band Of Anglers, the Ocean Born Swimming Bucktail, adds side wings that provide lift underwater (for better depth control) and deflect off snags. It hasthe same ribbed bottom as his Flying Pencil and Flying Popper to cut down on air resistance and improve casting distance. There’s a metal collar to protect the threads from toothy fish, and “The Original Patrick Sebile Hook Design” which features an inversed curve to allow for better hook-ups and less lost fish.
To suggest this is an improvement on the bucktail jig would be blasphemous – at least in surfcasting circles – but it’s appears to be in a category all its own: swimming jigs, bucktail or otherwise.
