New Van Staal X-Series

Craig Cantelmo of Van Staal reels recently made an unannounced visit to the On The Water headquarters. He’d brought with him a new reel, the Van Staal X-Series.

This reel took the Van Staal VS series and improved the line lay and the drag to create an even better reel for catching big fish from the beaches to the blue water.

According to Craig, “X-Wrap Oscillation” creates a perfectly flat line lay, allowing the spool to carry more line and creating less friction during the cast, which translates into extra casting distance. The better line lay also prevents the line from digging into the spool when under pressure. An improved drag features a drag-adjustment clicker and finer tuning, allowing fishermen to more precisely set their drag for slowing down a big fish on the run.

The VS X-Series will be available for purchase this fall.

hope you solved the line-sticking problems..the last thing I expected to happen when i bought my dad our third 750$ van staal for his 60th was that hes was gonna break off the fish of a lifetime because the #30 braid stuck in the spool on his vs 100, i saw that fish that fish it was huge-and now its gone. this aint montauk where we fish, it takes a lifetime to hook into a #50 in atlantic city-he hooked it clean in the mouth-if he had his shimano he woulda landed it. hit me up Light Tackle fishing atlantic city 609 431 3046

Hunting big bass with a VS 100 your lookin for trouble. That’s what I use in the back to catch weakies. I wouldn’t blame it on the line lay that’s a light tackle reel. There’s a fare share of large fish here just a small window they ate biting in south jersey

Sounds like a nice set up, I have a 150 and a 250, I’m in the marker for a 200, is it worth waiting till fall? Also any price difference?

Finely the admit there was a problem with the line lay & it hampered the casting distance. I’ve been saying this for years. One reason why I sold all of mine.
Let’s see what this ones going cost!

Ive been fishing VS reels since the Early 90’s, Ive got 8 of em.. never had a problem with Line lay and casting distance.. im the guy on the beach that everyone is pissed off at because Im catching fish and they arent, why? because I outcast them, with a VS. If you sold yours good luck.. they only reel that compares is a Z and they cost more, so whats your beef??

Woh! 8 VSs. You must be Wall Street banker, successful entrepreneur, or rich from family money. I’ve been eyeing a VS for years, but still unable to pull the trigger because of price.

Inexperience breaks of fish. My vs’ s have taken countless big fish over the years. Is a vs 100 ideal to take a big fish, no, but i have no doubts it can a will handle a slob. And light tackle fishing? Your videos show you using 10,000 series reels, that’s not light tackle. One day you will be ready to for the big leagues and to play with the big boys, for now have fun in the minors. One day you will be a legend like me.

    The legend

The line”Stuck.?” Most likely had a wind loop or knot in the wrap and wasn’t keeping tension properly applied. Thirty pound line is plenty for anything you will find on these waters. You didn’t say , so I’ll assume you were using braid , P.Pro?
We’ll chalk this up to “mystery break off”. Remember that Al Mc Reynolds was using twenty pound mono with the proper knots when he snagged his seventy eight plus pound beauty.

Just to let you guys out there know about the VS 100. I took one of very first VS 100 prototype reels to St John USVI in 1997 and had no problem landing yellow fin tuna in the 30# to 40# class on 12# mono. Was fishing with Loren Nickbargh on World Class Anglers using live bait. Loren almost laughed me off the boat when I came aboard saying I wanted to use these “little funny looking reels with no bails.” By the end of our first trip I was the one laughing. I’ve owned all of the early VS reels and never lost any fish, of any size, to line getting caught up. Of course these were all manufactured at the original VS plant in CT, not manufactured in China like the VS of today. It should be interesting to see the X Series VS cast distance wise, and the price point. Back in 1997 I never paid more than $275 even for the VS 300. Those days are long gone.

I like Van Staal, ALOT. They make a superior fishing reel. I just can’t wrap my head around dishing out that type of cash for something that is NO LONGER made in AMERICA .

I have a VS275 manual bail on a Century. It is a BEAST set up. It’s spooled with 65lb braid and casts like a cannon. OK…so I way over compensate with this setup but as I lost a lifetime fish last year with my Old Dependable Penn 704Z on 25lb mono I was fully invested in transitioning to a sealed reel with manual bail on a premium rod. The reel seat seats on the Century are cracked and shot after 1 season in the Vineyard surf but the VS275 handled all hook ups with ease. I beat the snot out of the VS275 and it took all abuse and more…rocks, sand, dunking and more. This reel is indestructible. My learning curve with the manual bail was steep and amusing at times but now I swear by it. I have had zero line lay problems with this reel. I am eager to test drive a VSX.

My feelings exactly on the vs. I’ve been waiting for the day I could have the cash to get one ,not so sure I want it now ! Made in China? Are you serious?

I don’t understand why lots of guys think something not made in the U.S. is no good. I have 6 V.S. that was made overseas and they are great…
I was born in the U.S. and stopped buying Cars made here. Made in U.S. is cool but not good. I saw my dad get ripped off when buying a new Chevy -Dodge or Ford. I remember my Dad writing down all the problems with the car. Window doesn’t roll up or down, Top leaks when raining. Car Rattles .. Then at 60,000 mile it needed a trans, timing belt-water pump.
Somewhere we [U.S] stopped caring about building things. No one cares here -if you screw up, All well !!! If you screw up overseas, you lose a finger or your job !!!

well i bought a new penn spinfisher v 7500 , at the same time my friend bought a van staal i walked out with new plugs and a supreme surf bag for less than $450. we fish together at least 3 times a week , we use the same rod and line the cast is about the same …very good. for the cost of an overpriced reel to gain a few yards doesn’t seem worth it to me, if these reels were maybe 50% more than penn i would probably go for it, if they were made in usa definetly. not to say van staal isn’t agreat reel but the price is crazy . i just opened up the penn no waterin the reel, and i dunk it every time i fish i hose and lube it every trip penn is building a great product in this reel i also have a 5500 and a 4500 love them.

    1. Yourmomsfuntaco

Try reeling that penn under water…….
I have a few Spin Fishers…. They are great! But they are no Van Staal…
and just so you know, the price has nothing to do with “gaining a few extra yards.”

they have american made van staals? just hard to find nowadays. i have a gold 200 american made.

  16. Sy

All the guys crying about stuff not made in the U.S. is ridiculous. As a American I would love to see everything made here, but guaranteed more then 80% of the stuff you own is made over seas, and all you guys saying buy American are hypocrites. Mr buy American probably has a foreign car, motorcycle, boat motor, surf rod all using foreign part especially your prized
    Harley Davidson. TRUTH HURTs
So you can put on your American flag shirts on and cry all you want but your part of the problem too.

Got a VSB100-stiff as hell ! I´ve been cranking it for a month as I watch TV and ride out my cabin fever-its now really smooth and easy to reel-these reels do take some break-in and I guess what I did would amount to about a years fishing in turns on the handle. This is an issue I have never seen properly addressed-hopefully this provides a solution to the many questions I have seen , mostly unanswered.
