Surf-Caught Cod

Over the weekend I got this email from OTW Forecast Writer, Insider and general fishing fanatic, Ron Powers

Subject: In cod we trust

We who have been at this thing for awhile appreciate that special photo as much as the catching, well almost.  Among my most cherished pictures are fluke and tautog not only caught from the shore but form water north of Boston! But my most sought after shot has always evaded me until yesterday! While live lining a pollock among my most cherished north shore rockpile I landed what was quite possibly the most beautiful cod I’ve ever seen, glow orange/red, perfect fins and pauchy belly. A perfect fish. While the size – 28″, 8-pounds, wouldn’t win may head boat pools, from the shore…it was quite the catch especially in 2011 when we have no inshore cod fishing to speak of.

Prior I had landed 6 similiarly sized stripers and in this shallow battlefield the cod fought far harder! Since I was by my lonesome, taking the shot was a challenge as I gingerly perched the camera among the crags and the chasms and scrambled into range before the automatic timer went off – but, I got a few nice pictures. Sometimes its the inadvertent that makes this thing of ours so special!
