Field Test Preview: Daiwa Seagate

It wasn’t so long ago that bottom fishing and groundfishing felt a lot like work. Big clunky reels, heavy, unforgiving rods and thick monofilament lines made the experience too close to exercise. But over the past decade, some excellent options have become available. Thin-diameter braided lines inspired the invention of small, powerful reels, that packed a lot of punch in a tiny package, and had high-speed retrieve rates that got bottom rigs to the boat in a hurry.

Initially these type of reels sported priced tags well north of $200, but with the introduction of the new line of Daiwa Seagate reels, anglers can enjoy all the advantages of these high-end reels for a very reasonable $149.95.

The new Daiwa Seagate Conventional Reel.

The reels feature a corrosion-proof composite frame, dual anti-reverse, corrosion-resistant ball bearings and an advanced carbon drag. The reel comes in 5 sizes suited for everything from black sea bass to smaller tuna. The larger reels take in an impressive 48 inches per crank while the smaller models pick up 35 inches with each turn. I have the smallest model, the SGT20H that I look forward to putting to work on some blackfish in the coming weeks.

      David,
I would think the SGT35H or SGT40H would be perfect for offshore sea bass and cod. Spooled with braid, there will be more than enough line capacity to mine the depths for the winter wreck-dwellers. J and H on Long Island has them on their website for ordering right now. I’m not sure where else they are currently available.

Picked up a 30h the other day on the word from a buddy that these deals are bullet proof and perform well over the test of time. So took it out chunking for bass today and this thing is a pretty powerful. Casts real nice too for those who like to get away from other anglers on the party boat scene. Very nice real
