Boston Based Reel Company – Cheeky Fly Fishing

I was introduced to Cheeky Fly Fishing last year when I heard about their March Madness Fishing challenge. I signed up for the contest, which involved a bracket filled out with fish instead of college basketball teams. The idea was to pick the fish that would receive the most votes (i.e. be the most popular) in match-ups against other fish. I did the same thing I do in my NCAA brackets, and took my home team to the finals instead of the “smart” pick, and when stripers got bounced in the second round, so did my bracket.

Through the March Madness, I did some emailing back and forth with Pete Crommett of Cheeky Reels and found out this company is headquartered in Boston, where the reels are manufactured. Cheeky Fly Fishing produces high end, high performance fly reels made by fishing nuts. On the company description on the website, they say “our rods and reels spend more time rinsing in the shower than we do.” I can relate.

The two reels on the market right now are the Cheeky Mojo 425 inshore/heavy duty freshwater reel – think stripers, blues, albies, steelhead, salmon, carp – and the Cheeky Ambush 375 for a middle-weight freshwater species like largemouths, smallmouths and big trout. The reels were designed with the idea of producing a super light, super strong reel, that requires zero maintenance.

Another notable thing about the reels is the look. With a sleek design and flashy colors, the Cheeky reels are stylish as well. If you’re serious, or getting serious, about fly fishing in the Northeast, and beyond, a Cheeky Reel belongs on your wish list.
