While I like to fish, I love competition. It makes fishing all that much more fun when there’s a potential prize for a fish at the end of the day.

  2. Justin Ferbert

I fish the Striper Cup for the opportunity to be considered and recognized as one of the best striper fishermen in the Northeast. The prizes are an added bonus.

  3. Daniel Bardon

    Yes I fish striper cup.

  4. Mike Shanahan

I read every online issue of On The Water Magazine each time it’s published online.

I find it the only place to go to when I need an informative source about what’s going on in our New England Fisheries.

I fish the Striper Cup every year because of what I feel the tournament stands for. For me the tournament is a reminder that the elusive “catch of a lifetime” could be waiting for you at the end of the next cast. Whether it be your first 30 pounder or the new world record striped bass, every year at the Striperfest party I hear stories of anglers who against all odds land incredible catches. When all of this is combined with a fantastic opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends I find it hard to think of a reason not to enter.

Good natured bragging rights are a great benefit to any outing be it fishing ,football ,or even a chili cookoff. But the man that really got me in to fishing was a firm believer in plain old luck good or bad ,like “you should have be here yesterday we killed ’em” or “to bad we only have one orange pulg they hit this one ever time”.Talent ,skill, good equipment, time spent practising are all key ,but luck can put a 50lb line sider in your boat or skunk you. I fish the Striper Cup because some times I just feel lucky Garth Morris

  8. dan horgan

It adds to the competition, and the opportunity to win prizes just makes it more enjoyable

The idea of belonging to a bunch of good-nature-d people all wanting to catch ‘the big one’ is why! I went (as a guest) to the 2011 end of the year shindig by my new boyfriend who convinced me to buy my fishing license, online mind you, and led me to the excitement of catching a 32″ fish down in a canal I never knew existed! It was amazing! I can’t wait to sign up and get started. Thanks OTW!

Hello, first as all, I’d like apologize for my English. I grow up in a little town in Cuba. I’m used to go fishing or hunting almost every day when I was a child in rivers and dams, using very poor resources. I came to this country three years ago, finding that fishing is not sport, is a culture; and is a science behind the construction of rods, reel, and lines.
I started fishing last year, when I could afford my first rod and reel, but without much luck, experience, and without knowledge of good fishing spots.
I looked on the web, and I found “On The Water”, the StriperCup, and the StriperFest, and I get excited the idea of competing with the professionals, although will not win, and being in the festival.
Last month I bought my subscription to the “On The Water” magazine, and I’m reading a lot on the web. I think, I will be ready on the spring to participate.
    Best regards,

I have fished in the Striper Cup every year. Why……well I’m fishing anyway and I think it’s a good way to support the recreational fishing industry.
I might win something but that would just be a bonus while having a great time.

    The catch and release pins!

  13. Mark Yabut

I participated a few years ago…my two main reasons were bragging rights and the hope of winning a boat!

  14. Ken Ottariano

Reasons to fish the Striper Cup. Just in case, I catch the fish of a lifetime it would be nice to get official recognition and I could brag about it the rest of my life. The tee shirts and registration gifts are great and a value for the fee paid. The Striper Cup festival at the end is just the icing on the cake. There is a lot of value for the registration fee, but please don’t raise the fee.

  15. Patrick Gilmartin

I fish the Striper Cup and have for the last 5 years because it gives me extra incentive to wake up in the middle of the night, becuase I always hope for a chance at that one big one, and because I like the camraderie of such a tournament.

  16. Jeff

I enter the Striper Cup because you never know when you might catch a cow and you can’t win if you dont enter.

  17. chris santos

I fish as part of a team and to contribute a team fish from a kayak is a huge goal in our club. smack talk amongst frends breeds unbelievable rivalries

  18. Rob Nelson

I fish the Striper Cup because…

there are nights when the wind is howling and the rain is cold and all I want to do is sit in front of the TV, but I know the winning fish might be out there.

after having to give up competitive distance running due to injuries, I need something to keep that fire alive.

it is and always has been in an angler’s blood to be recognized as a great fisherman and what better forum than to match yourself against the Northeast’s best.

Finally, I fish the Striper Cup because when I am walking out of the house for the fifth night in a row while the kids are whining and the laundry is piling up…I can tell my wife “Hey, this might be the night I catch the prize winner! And I’ll sign the check over to you, dear!”

PS: The pin is really cool too!

  19. Dick Duddy

Just the thought of the possibility of hoisting that winning cow bass up in front of thousands of fishing fanatics at the Striper Cup drives me wild. You’d have bragging rights forever.

  20. JGrib

This will be my first year fishing the event and I am doing it to have fun and bust chops with a few of the guys I fish with.

  21. Matt S.

This year the opportunity to win the Hydro-Sport

  22. Gary

I like to sign up my 12 year old daughter and myself for two reasons. First this gives her more motivation to go fishing with me. Second my wife doesn’t count this fishing time against me, Bonus!

  23. Michael Card

Every year I look forward to landing the “big one”. I no longer keep anything over 30″, so I keep tabs on what is the size I need to be in the running for a prize. The real fun is attending the “Fest” and buying gear I have to have for next season.

  24. Jim Murray

I have been Fishing the StriperCup from the beginning, gives me added reason to get on the water and fish with my family and friends knowing that if we have some luck, we might win some great prizes and the best reason of all is the get together with some great folks at the StriperFest….you might just get to meet the World Record Striper Holder – if your lucky! 🙂

  25. M.K. Hamilton

The striper cup is a great source of competition between me and my fishing buddies. Even if we are not landing tournament record breakers, the competetion between us makes it worth it. Plus, the prizes are pretty good too!

  26. Paul Tokarz

I have been an avid Striped Bass fisherman since the 80’s. I also have been a devoted reader of your magazine for years. The fact I fish for striped bass regardless, and have the opportunity to win a prize and a shot at a boat goes without speaking. The best is I do not even have to catch a fish for an entry to win a boat and go to a big party! Keep up the shows and the great work OTW!!!!
    Paul

  27. Alan Gonyea

I would love to win that boat! I am a shore bound striper fisherman and I don’t
catch many, but I will be out there fishin’ anyway, so I might as well be entered in
the “cup”. Just in case I land a big one!
I bought a kayak last fall and plan on striper fishin’ in it. I will need some new gear for this new hobby, including a good pair of sunglasses to wear while I’m out on the water.
Thanks, see ya at the Outdoor Expo!

  29. Bruce Brown Sr

I love it when my friends get together in the fall to fish and hang out telling stories.
We go to the striper fest to have a good time, see the fish caught over the season and a chance to win the boat.

  30. Roman Dudus

I love just having a reason to get out on the water and give it my best to catch a fish of a life-time.

  31. Mike Picewick

I work 12 to 14 hour days. The striper cup gave my son and daughtet(who want to enter this year) and I that little bit of extra incentive to get out fishing every chance we got.

  32. Tom Houde

I fish the striper cup as a shared goal of capturing the cup for the Aquidneck Island Striper Team. This goal gives me purpose each and everytime I get my line wet in our quest for the cup. I am forever in debt to the AIST as this team has shared its experiences and knowledge of our local waters unselfishly and led me to my first strper ever. There is a certain amount of competition within the team, but we conduct ourselves with comraderie and help our community. The team does its best when passing down its skills to our next generation of team members.

  33. paul maki

The striper cup reminds me fishing with my dad and his friends during the schaefer cup days, which I do now with my son. Also it brings back memories of going to the schaefer derby meetings at the south works v.f,w. in worcester and seeing the schaefer cup trophy alway on the raffle table.

  34. John Liss

Whats not to like? Each season I get to fish from MA to NJ and being in the striper cup and wearing that pin makes bait shop owners realize you are a serious fisherman. Pounder pins show that you have achieved a certain level of success and recognizing other with striper cup pins gives you a common ground to talk about.
Finally, the opportunity to win really great prizes and partake in the fall festival is a lot of fun as well. Also, you get a shirt and a lure for signing up. IWhats not to like.
    John Liss

  35. Vernon Dingman

My first passion, besides my wife, is fishing. I am in my mid fifties and the one thing I have learned about fishing is anything can happen. That is why I have fished the Striper Cup since it started. I have not landed the big one yet, but you never know. I know there a big fish out there with my name on it and that is why I will continue to fish the Striper Cup. Beside where can you go for a great annual party and possibly walk away with the boat of your dreams.

  36. Sean

I will be entering this year to get a chance to win the boat, and maybe a prize along the way.

  37. Butch B

Mid-life crisis.I hit 47 yrs old and decided I needed a hobby. Picked up a surfcaster and haven’t looked back. I like alone time and there is nothing like being on the cape & islands trying to catch the next “record”. And let’s face it; the appeal of possibly winning the NorthCoast boat is classic!

  38. Al Frates

We have always fished as a family and the being part of the Striper Cup just enhances the experience.

  39. Eric Knott

I fish the striper cup because on those very early mornings when, because of the ‘night before’ I want to stay in bed, it is an incentive to get down to the boat and fish.
Of course, … the chance of winning a boat does not hurt!

  40. Christopher Jensen

I fish the striper cup because i love fishing tournaments. The competition is great and it pushes you a little bit harder when you have a team of guys all working together to win the cup. It brings all my fishing friends closer as we work towards the common goal of being the best team out there. Its great to meet all the other devoted, skilled, and avid fishermen out there that all share the same passion. Its amazing how something so simple can become so addictive. OTW does a fantastic job with all the prizes, judging, weigh in stations, websites, magazine updates and articles. Everyone loves being part of a team for the camaraderie and I hope this tournament continues for ever. Keep up the great work OTW.

For good times great people and bragging rights oh yeah the new t-shirt has a lot to do with why I fish the striper cup

  42. Chris

I love the pounder pins, the t-shirt, the party and oh yeah…. the fishing too!

  43. ray west

I join for the opportunities and chance- you have opportunity to win a boat, gear, cash should you hook the right fish at the right time. You also get the opportunity to be recognized among your peers for having caught a decent fish whether you keep it or release it. Joining gives you a chance at many positive outcomes- worst case you end up with a tee shirt and lure after being skunked all year and not winning the boat-

  44. pete mcmanus

because you dont have to be the best fisherman, just the luckiest. And i would love to brag to my friends!!

  45. JOE POWER

Why , because it gives me extra time to fish with my son . We get up at 4 am to catch our tide or our spot for the outgoing tide . Take the 45 minute drive to the Atlantic . He caught a 34 inch Striper and entered it in the Striper Cup . But when you see a 7 year old boy battle this fish for a good ten minutes and reading the water and trying to land the fish with the timing of the incoming wave , it is AWESOME . We entered the fish and to find out it was disqualified . Fish has to be atleast 36 inches to be entered . He was bummued out and was hoping to win a weekly prize . He said maybe we should of read the rtules first DAD . Anyway I showed him how to filet his fish and how to handle a knife . And explaining about Catch abd release and keeping a fish to eat . Fishing the CUP is great and when we enter this year his friends will ask him if they can go with us at 4 am . We plan our Trips all the time and are ready for the Cup this year . Surfbags ready to go rods and reels cleaned and repaired. And when he gets his STRIPER CUP Teeshirt he wears it proudly at school . We spend more time with each other since fishing the STRIPER CUP . What more can be said . Time with my son and my Daughter is 3 years old and already caught a 10″ Largemouth and 3 Perch on her DORA ROD and reel . We book a room at the end of the year for the Striper Cup in Falmouth stay the night and enjoy hearing what other fishermen have to say . This is why I fish the STRIPER CUP . . I love seeing his smile when the bite is on and his rod bent over and watching him reel in his STRIPER’S . And how he watches the birds and scans the ocean for anything . . . And he loves getting up at 4 am with me do the 45 minute drive for ” FIRST LIGHT ” . . . This is why I fish the STRIPER CUP . Not to win . . .but for the extra time with my SON . .

  46. James Romero

I fish the striper cup because i love to fish. And i’ve been fishing since i was 5 years of age.I also like fish when i get my familys kids come over and friends kids come over i would take them out for what ever fish is there to fish for.And for me I love to go after stripers.

  47. Madmedic366

I am doing the catch and release. I am doing this along with the RISAA’s governors cup and Surfcasters Striperthon which are both catch and release. I think this is a great thing, to catch a large fish and to release it for another day.

  48. Jim B.

I fish the Striper Cup Surf Division for a few reasons. First, I think On The Water does a good job running the magazine and the contest and that makes me feel good about being a participant. I’ve joined for a number of years now that’s always been the case. The free stuff you get for entering and what you stand to win in the end is also nice. I really enjoy fishing, but don’t get to as often as I’d like, so being a participant is more apt to motivate me to find opportunities to get out and fish. I wasn’t able to fish at all in 2011 due to the surgery, treatments and recovery from colon cancer, but now I’m healing and probably more anxious than most to be able to get down to the water’s edge, shake the cobwebs off and ply my luck.

  49. bill albaugh

This will be my first year signing up.im 49 and son is 21,we compete together everyear against each other now he has challenged both of us to compete with the best.

  50. Jackie Coffee

I love to fish with my family and friends. I fish with a group of guys that don’t think i will do well. Just like they though that way in a tournament that i did with them and out of all of us i was the only one that caught a big fish and they all didn’t. I enjoyed it to the fullest. They motivate me to do better every time and the look in those faces when i do bring that big fish out is priceless. JC

  51. Grant Olsen

For me it’s all about improving. I know that the top striper anglers will all be at the Cup so I want to be there too so I can learn from the best!

  52. Mike Tucker

I fish the Striper Cup because it is the premier opportunity to compete against the largest field over the longest period of time and region. I fish mostly catch and release for these beautiful fish and with the hope that one day I can win the boat.

  53. Tommy

To beat those Jersey boys! This is the year! 😉
the prizes are pretty cool too..

  54. Craig Sheppard

My first time participating in Striper Cup this year, looks well run and may be loads of fun! I love to fish, love the water and love to compete! Good luck everyone!

  55. curtiss bruno

I fish the Striper Cup because two years ago I had a 38 pounder on 5/5 and didn’t enter and missed out! Never again!

  56. Don A

I fish for the neat looking pins & keeping competitive fishing alive. It gives me information on what is around in our saltwaters. Plus, It gives me more incentive to fish often.

  57. brendan Straight

the reason why i like the fishing in the cup is nothing better than a friendly competion while set alittle fire under you to seek out the bigger fish whether you may not fish in the rain or tides you dont normally fish to complete that one objective catch that goliath.!… so keep the beers cold and the rods bent! and have fun!

  58. Robert Gilmartin

This will be my first year fishing the striper cup. I am fishing it to do some competative fishing with my son. I just recently retired from the US Navy after 25 years and haven’t had much of an opportunity to fish with my son. Having recently reloated back to New Jersey, I now have the opportunity to teach him about surf fishing and the joys of catching a big striper.

    1. Kevin Blinkoff

That’s great Robert! Good to luck to you and your son.

      1. jm

        the prestige

  59. jm

the prestige , i wanna beat meyersons record in my kayak. I have been traing all winterl. Eye of the tiger!!!

  60. Michael LaCroix

Just something about it,cant quite think of why its so cool! I guess a chance at winning a boat keeps me coming back! lol

  61. John Howell

The striper cup gives me incentive to get out and fish when the weather isn’t perfect and it would be easier to not go.

I also enjoy seeing what everyone else is catching.

It appeals to my competive nature.

The OTW staff does a fine job of running the Cup. I watched last year without joining,

and did I mention the sharp tee-shirts for signing up for the cup?

  62. Jeff Thompson

I love to fish. I am an avid sport fisher. I m very competitive.
I love the commradere and competition when fishing with friends.
By fishing the striper cup, my friendship base has expanded.
My competitive field has as well.

  63. Jason medeiros

Not that I need it, but more motivation to get out and fish and enjoy the outdoors!

  64. Carl Johansen

To be honest, I have never been a competitive person when it comes to fishing. The size or the number of fish I may catch was never my prime reason for fishing or joining the Striper Cup. Fishing is like taking a chance at a lottery, just like the gold ticket is a chance at perhaps being lucky enough to win something that in my life time on this earth , I was never able to afford. To those who find being competitive is the mantra they have chosen to join the Striper Cup I wish them all well and success, Just pick out my Gold ticket from the many and I will die a happy old man.

  65. Dan Horgaan

I love fishing, and never seem to get on the water as much as I’d like, but the added incentive that you could win prizes as well as support recreation fishing at the same time, how could you not join!

  66. J walsh

    I fish the striper
Cup because you never know when the big one will bite. And the striper cup feat is the best.

  67. Henry

Because I am going to be fishing anyway, so why not.

  68. chris n

Love yhe striper cup always get free stuff and also hust to be on the water have a shot of getting that fish of a lifetime and win a prize for it and to release it too

  69. John Augustine

That’s easy…my 3 fishing partners are the most competitive people I know. The tournament elevates our striper fishing to a whole new level, even off the water we are just ribbing each other and the other anglers. We still are pushing each another on the water, because we want to win. So, it takes something we love and elevates it to a whole new level!
