During the summer months, you can count on at least a couple fishing tournaments taking place every weekend for everything from fluke to sharks.
One of the biggest shark tournaments of the year took place this weekend out of Montauk, the 26th Annual Star Island Shark Tournament. This year’s winner was a 422-pound thresher caught aboard the Bluefin. Almost as impressive was the 344-pound mako that took second place. There seems to be a good amount of big makos around this year.

Another shark tournament took place farther west on the island, the 40th Annual Freeport Hudson Shark Tournament. In this contest, a 230-pound thresher caught aboard the Our Passion narrowly edged out a 225-pound thresher caught aboard the Mojo for first place honors.

The Smithtown Bay Yacht Club hosted the annual Soldiers on the Sound Tournament on Saturday. The tournament honors members of the US armed forces who have served – and are currently serving – by getting them out on the water and after some fluke. “Team Lucky,” consisting of Captain Paul Schumann and soldiers John Angerame and Curtis Johnson (both 106th Rescue Wing Air National Guardsman) won the event with a 7-pound, 15-ounce doormat. They will have their names engraved on the coveted Winner’s Plaque which is proudly displayed in the SBYC lobby.
