Fans of the movie JAWS are gearing up for JAWSFEST: The Tribute, taking place August 9-12 on Martha’s Vineyard, aka, “Amity Island.” The event will explore how the making of JAWS has impacted the lives of those who came to Amity in 1974 and how the blockbuster film they created continues to impact lives today. The tribute will concentrate on the men and women of JAWS who have passed, with special focus on Peter Benchley, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw.

The event includes LIVING JAWS, a series of lively and engaging discussions with event VIPs on the making of JAWS and how the film impacted their lives and families in the 1970s to the present; BEHIND THE SCREAMS, a museum-quality display of private collections of JAWS photographs and memorabilia from the filming, including items from private collections and other never-before-seen items; SHARK IN THE PARK, an afternoon of baseball, family activities, the opportunity to meet with VIPs, and more; SHARKS, ARTS & CONSERVATION, an “event within an event” presented in collaboration with Featherstone Center for the Arts that includes the opportunity to meet with globally recognized shark experts such as Dr. Greg Skomal and members of Shark Savers and Discovery Channel Shark Week; a TRIVIA HUNT and RANDOM RE-ENACTMENTS; and THE TRIBUTE & JAWS ON THE BIG SCREEN on beautiful Ocean Park, Oak Bluffs, with very special intros and the full roster of VIPs present.

Six Living Jaws sessions will be held at Edgartown’s Old Whaling Church, including “Producing a Blockbuster,” “How JAWS Changed Our Lives,” and “Antics From Amity” (see full schedule here). A special outdoors Living Jaws session, “The Making of Jaws” will take place in Owen Park, Vineyard Haven, the first night of the event and feature screenwriter Carl Gottlieb, production director Joe Alves, and actor Jeffrey Kramer. Attending VIPs include Wendy Benchley, Joanne Shaw Myers, Jeffrey Kramer, Carl Gottlieb, Joe Alves, Susan Backlinie, Dr. Greg Skomal, Greg Nicotero, Edith Blake, Susan and Lynn Murphy, Shark Savers, Lee Fierro, Brent Mills, Rodney Fox, Chris Fischer, and Brett McBride.
In addition to the Living Jaws presentations, the event includes a VIP-attended opening ceremony; Behind the Screams, an exhibit of collectibles and memorabilia with life-sized models of the movie’s three main characters; Shark in the Park, an afternoon of games, autograph signings, and family activities including a 3-story shark slide; Shark After Dark party events; and a special tribute and “Jaws” screening in Ocean Park, Oak Bluffs.
Shark experts from the around the world will join the JAWSFEST team to help educate the public about sharks and the need for shark conservation. On Saturday August 11, Living Jaws session “Fish Stories: In the Water With Great Whites” will feature Wendy Benchley, Discovery Channel “Shark Week” experts, and other shark experts as they discuss the current state of shark conservation.
Shark conservation is also at the forefront of a standalone exhibit in Oak Bluffs. Sharks, Arts, and Conservation includes displays from Shark Savers and Discovery Channel “Shark Week” along with exceptional artwork, short films, kids shark art, kids shark poetry, and a shark poem from Martha’s Vineyards’ first-ever Poet Laureate.
The event coincides with Universal Studios’ 100th Anniversary celebration and the August 14th release of JAWS on Blu-ray, featuring a fully restored and digitally remastered picture. JAWSFEST also coincides with the 25th anniversary of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. Experts from Shark Week and Shark Savers are helping the JAWSFEST team turn 2012 into the Summer for the Sharks on Martha’s Vineyard—a season-long initiative to raise funds and awareness to help with shark conservation.
JAWSFEST has declared 2012 the Summer for the Sharks on Martha’s Vineyard with a season-long initiative to help raise awareness of and conservation funds for sharks that includes a text-to-donate option (text JAWS to 56512). Locally crafted Great White Shark donation receptacles will be placed in Island businesses, with donated funds going to shark conservation efforts. Businesses will also be participating in a variety of promotions aimed at raising shark conservation funds, including “Eat the Locals,” “Sleep With For the Fishes,” and “Shop & Save (The Sharks).” On July 20, Martha’s Vineyard residents and visitors will be able to attend a free outdoor screening of a shark conservation movie at Owen Park in Vineyard Haven.

4. I have always loved sharks…and the movie hits something deeply frightening. Most of us have childhood memories of summering on the shore, and Jaws touches a nerve there. The scenes of mass panic on the beach are terrifying!

4. My mother took me to see Jaws in 1975 when I was 5 years old. It traumatized me and later became one of my favorite movies of all time! I am obsessed and fascinated with sharks! I am also obsessed with the making of JAWS and all of the technical aspects of the film that is why I would LOVE to attend Jawsfest!! Its the best movie ever and really influenced my childhood creatively! To this day everytime I revisit this monumental Film (or see the poster for that matter) it takes me right back to my youth, summertime and discovery of Art and Film. Till this day my imagination is still sparked by its magic and adventure over an over and over!

Jaws is a classic movie that I started watching with my dad at age 9…I can watch all four over and over and still be on the edge of my seat..lol I am now 35 with my own children and have passed on the tradition to my children who are 9 and 10. My son even has a Jaws/shark themed bedroom we are working on. I loved this movie sooo much as a child and even made it o California when I was in the 4th grade, where I took the backlot tour and was amazed!!! I KNOW my kids will pass on the tradition with their family and I’m positive my father is looking down at us all very poudly since it was one of his favorites as well :0)

To me this is a perfect movie, perfectly put together, filmed and acted out. It’s a movie I can, and do watch over and over, and still enjoy it.

Had a profound impact in my life! Lived on the beaches of Plymouth and Duxbury….couldn’t go back into the water after seeing the movie. The musicical score tormented me as a kid! Although now as an adult, i’ve been able to go back into the water. Became fascinated and studied sharks in school and became a big fan of John Williams! 🙂

I love jaws because I saw this movie with my father, and I was born in the Cape Cod area but have not been back since 1965, and would love to visit my birth place and see the settings of the movie that is still my favorite movie of all time.

4. Saw the movie as a young kid in the theaters. My folks were hesitant to take me and I said – who’s afraid of a fish?! Cripes – to this day, I can’t swim in the ocean w/o hearing that damn music.
