My First Fishing Trip

by Frankie Carroll

2nd Grade, Minnesauke Elementary School

When I woke up for my first fishing trip it was still dark out. Me, my Dad, and my Granddad were going on a fishing boat called The Peconic Star. The boat was docked in a town called Greenport. We had to wait on the dock for everyone to come before boarding the boat.  I was the youngest kid on the trip. When I was finally allowed on, I met the captain and the crew who would eventually help me reel in the first fish.

We drove out into open waters for about an hour. The crew put bait on my hook and I dropped my line into the water. After waiting for what felt like an hour, I finally felt something tugging on my line. I started to reel in the line but had to keep stopping so my line wouldn’t break. My Granddad and Dad helped me reel it in because I was getting tired. When we finally pulled the fish into the boat the crew took it off the hook. It was big enough to keep and I wanted to have my fish for dinner so they filleted it right on the boat and wrapped it in tin foil for us.

After several more hours of fishing and many caught fish it was time to head home. It was very relaxing ride back to the dock.

As we pulled into the dock my mom and sister were waiting to hear about my fishing adventure. Before getting off the boat I shook hands with the captain and thanked him for an awesome day! My day finally ended with us cooking my bluefish on the barbeque. It wasn’t that bad, I might actually try it again. I can’t wait to go on another fishing trip this summer.
