Long Island fluking has really taken off over the past few days with some real monsters caught in Long Island Sound and at Montauk. Northport, Huntington, Port Jefferson and Mattituck have led the way on the north side, with the open boat fleet scoring particularly. Capt. Bob in Mattituck decked a pair of 11-pounders on Saturday; the Osprey fleet drilled doormats to 8.75 pounds, James Joseph Fleet had whoppers to 11 pounds, plus over 20 fish topping 7 pounds, and Celtic Quest has put some big ones in the cooler as well. At Montauk, a strong showing of bigger fish started on Monday with doormats to 10 pounds hitting the deck of numerous charter boats. North Shore action has been under schools of squid schools in 35 – 55 feet of water. Big baits have been best with doormats fighting over whole squid that have been spit up by other keepers. Montauk action is a little shallower. I’d go with a long strip of fluke belly or squid like the one shown in the attached photo, which was taken last summer. (Feature photo by Tom Schlichter)
