Striper Migration Update 5-28-2014

Chesapeake Bay stripers continue to make their way north and fish over 30 pounds are being found from Delaware Bay to western Long Island Sound. Most of New England will have a shot at a keeper striper this week as well, with smaller keepers migrating as far north as Portland, ME.

New Jersey

• Large stripers are being caught under the bunker schools from Long Beach Island to Ocean City, and some keeper sized and larger fish have been appearing in the surf all the way south to Cape May.

• Big stripers of 30 to 50 pounds are feeding heavily on bunker off Ocean and Monmouth counties.

• For the most part, the fish have stayed out of reach of the surf fishermen, but favorable winds could push the bait and bass within reach.

• The Raritan Bay is producing big numbers of quality stripers, with 20-pound and larger stripers being caught regularly by boat fishermen.

New York

• Big stripers that have finished spawning in the Hudson River have moved into western Long Island Sound.

• Larger bass are moving along the South Shore of Long Island, but big schools of bluefish have made getting through to the bass a challenge at times.

• Stripers up to 20 pounds are spreading along the South Fork of Long Island, with big fish showing up in the inlets.

New England

• 40-pound-plus bass have been reported in western Long Island Sound.

• More bass, up to 30 pounds, have been reported outside the Connecticut River on the shoals of eastern Long Island Sound.

• Bass to 30 pounds are shadowing bunker schools in Narragansett Bay.

• Stripers over 30 pounds have been reported along the Elizabeth Islands and in Vineyard Sound.

• Stripers over 20 pounds have been reported in the Cape Cod Canal and in Cape Cod Bay, chasing mackerel.

• Still mostly schoolies and a few small keepers from Plymouth and Boston Harbor.

• Keepers to 36 inches are being caught in the Merrimack River.

• Schoolies have been confirmed as far north as Casco Bay, Maine.
