Fishing CT Update 5-29-14

Anglers are still finding some quality stripers in the Connecticut River. The Housatonic has been slow as of late, though. Some anglers have found some great fish in the sound also. Joe Diorio was out on the Eastern Sound this past week and caught some solid keeper fish on live eels and Storm Shads.

The walleye have been hungry lately and anglers are finding success with the night bite into early morning on places like Squantz Pond and Gardner Lake. Squantz has been particularly productive when fishing alewives on the bottom with long, light leaders and circle hooks. Matthew Musumano is pictured here with a great springtime walleye!

Fluke fishing has continued to be productive. Jack Wallace brought his kids out on his boat in search of some doormats over Memorial Day weekend. They used squid on bucktails and fluke rigs in 25-30 feet of water in the sound. His son Zakk landed a 6.24-pound fluke which was his best ever! Pictured are Jack’s kids, Zakk and Amanda Wallace.

Bass fishing is still red hot all over the state. Some fish have already spawned and have moved to adjacent cover such as emergent weeds or docks. But there are still a lot of fish that have yet to spawn. Fishing the shallows is where you can find some hefty females sitting on their beds. Anglers have been producing with 2- to 4-inch soft plastics. Lures like tubes and Keitech’s swing impact have been irresistible to big bass on their beds. Pictured is Dan Dececco with a great Candlewood lake smallie. He caught it in the early evening by a dock, southwest of the city Island in Danbury. He was using a 1/8-ounce tube jig with a 2 3/4-inch green pumpkin tube.
