Stripers – Some anglers are reporting excellent catches as of late. They’re also reporting losing a lot of gear to bluefish. Good bass are being caught off of Hatchetts, Plum Gut, Long Sand Shoal and the mouth of the CT river. With a great report last night of a 42lb bass caught at the mouth of the river on live bunker. Fishing during the day can be slow but the night bite has been excellent. Bunker are still loaded up in New Haven harbor and the mouth of the CT river. Look for the birds and you’ll find the bait. Grab your weighted trebles and go snag some bunker! Pictured is Nicole Diorio with one of many 40″+ fish she landed this past week. Snapper blues are also in and are plentiful as always. Great reports are coming from our tidal rivers, New Haven harbor as well as Milford. Specifically, the Silver Sands Beach/Charles Island area.
Fluke – Fluke fishing is reported as fair to good. A lot of shorts are being caught and the bigger fish are still holding in deeper water. Some anglers found a good number of decent fish in 50-60 feet of water, but those doormats are hanging a bit deeper in about 80-90 feet of water. Glow jigs were very productive too. Decent reports have come from Long sand shoal and the Falkner Island area. Pictured is Mike Hudak with two great Fluke, one of which was 22 inches. Seabass action is still hot and ground fishing will put you on some great fish. They seemed to be a bit more spread out this week but once you found them, it was on! We received reports of fish up to 4lbs. High-low rigs baited with clam strips or squid fished on/over rock piles is the way to go when targeting seabass. Porgy fishing has also been great with some real dinner plates being caught out on the reefs and some good fish are being taken from shore as well. Not much to report on Tautog as of late.
Bass – Bass fishing is still going strong and anglers are hooking up with some real hogs. Great largemouth reports have come from Saltonstall, Bashan, Bantam, Candlewood and Ball pond. The smallmouth action is just as hot on Shenipsit, Candlewood, Squantz and Colebrook. Anglers are slamming fish with topwater from dusk til dawn. Jitter bugs, spooks and poppers of all kinds have been getting explosive reactions from bass. Panfish action is hot all over the state. Pike fishing has been decent with some reports from the upper Housatonic, Bantam and the CT river. The summer time walleye bite has been good. Solid reports have come from Squantz while fishing alewives at night. Some ok reports have also come from the Saugatuck Reservoir. Pictured is Adrian Pinos with a nice Candlewood lake walleye that was just under 6lbs. In recent weeks there have been reports of an 8lb and a 7lb walleye that were pulled from Candlewood. The bite is only going to get better leading into the fall.
