It was a great weekend for fishing and boating at Blue Marsh Lake. All types of fish were hitting throughout the lake, and the weather was perfect. A strong crappie bite using live minnows over structure produced some big fish, and nice size bass were striking crank baits in the Tulpehocken arm of the lake. A few good size Striped Bass (30 inch/9 lb. range) were taken on live Alewives in 15-20 feet of water near the southern end of the island. Striped Bass activity should really pick up, as the fall approaches, and Alewives are always top bait.
The use of a cast net to catch Alewives requires a permit that can be obtained through our web site.

Trout fishing continues to be good on the Tulpehocken Creek Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only Area, with caddis and wooly buggers being the best choice. The next trout stocking on the creek is scheduled for Oct. 3.

Chambers Lake, in scenic Hibernia Park, is an often-underutilized resource. At 90 acres, it is a great place to paddle your canoe or kayak and a great place to hook up with a wide variety of fish. This beautiful 11 ½” Yellow Perch was caught recently from shore on a minnow near the bottom. It is a nice representative sample of the benefits of the Panfish Enhancement Special Regulations in place at Chambers Lake that require Bluegills to be at least 7 inches and Yellow Perch and Crappies to be at least 9 inches before you put them in your bucket or stringer. Chambers Lake is also a Special Regulation Big Bass Lake with a minimum size of 15 inches.

If you are going to be boating on Chambers Lake, make sure you have your launch permit for any unpowered boat, or that your boat is registered if powered by an electric motor, as you may not run a gas motor on Chambers Lake. All boats must have one wearable USCG approved PFD for each person on board and children 12 and under must wear their PFD while underway. Big bait means big fish? Maybe not! After watching countless Muskellunge anglers casting and trolling those 12 to 14 inch plugs in all kinds of different colors, this 42-inch beauty fell for a one-inch long Crappie rig!

Northampton County

Minsi Lake has been fishing very well lately for Largemouth Bass. Run dark rubber worms along the lily pads. Pickerel are also being caught on the same rubber worms along with live minnows. Bushkill Creek Catch & Release area anglers are doing well fly-fishing using very small nymphs and black gnat imitations.

Lehigh County

The Lehigh River is providing Smallmouth Bass action due to low flows for anglers using silver spinners and grubs on small jig heads. The Little Lehigh Fly Fishing Only area is a little slow. For the fly anglers, Trico hatches have been sporadic early in the mornings.
