Old Colony Power Squadron Offering America’s Boating Course

If you are interested in an exciting, in-depth boating safety course, check out America’s Boating Course. This course is an 8 week course (6 evenings of instruction a review session and a final exam.

Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete America’s Boating Course. This beginner boating class will give you the knowledge needed to obtain a boat license or safety certification in many states. This boat safety course is fun and very thorough.

Boat and Safety Topics covered include:

• Introduction to Boating: Types of boats ; different uses; various power options; and family boating basics
• Boating Law: Boat registrations; federal and state regulations; required safety equipment; safe oper-ation and accident reporting; protecting the marine environment and personal watercraft requirements.
• Boating Safety Equipment: PFD’s (life jackets); fire extinguishers; distress signals; first aid kits ; and other boating safety equipment
• Safe Boating: alcohol drug abuse; entering, loading and trimming a boat; fueling; steering; docking and undocking; knots; filing a float plan; and general water safety.
• Navigation: the US aids to navigation system; types of bouys and beacons; navigation rules; avoiding collisions;
• Boating Problems: hypothermia; boating accidents and rescues; capsizing; running aground; emer-gency radio calls; carbon monoxide; and other boating problems.
• Trailering, Storing and Protecting Your Boat: types of trailers; trailer brakes, lights, hitches, tires and bearings; loading and balancing, towing and backing a trailer; launching and retrieving; storage and theft protection.
• Water Sports: water skiing safety guidelines and hand signals; kayaking and canoeing safety; safely transporting equipment; fishing from a boat or kayak; and other safe boating tips.
