It’s too easy to get lost in thought while prepping saltwater gear this time of year as reports continue to roll in regarding plus-sized fish being landed off New England shores. With visions of “the big one” snacking on your go-to lure or favorite bait as you continuously check the striper migration map, you tend to find yourself paying more attention to the tide charts than conducting an inventory of your freshwater tackle. Reminder: this time of year also offers great opportunities for anglers in search of hungry largemouth bass. With water temps in local ponds warming up, the bite continues to improve as the spawn nears its end. Soon enough, from Block Island Sound to Race Point, many eels, mackerel and pogies will find themselves dangling in front of trophy-sized linesiders in search of an easy snack. Remeber this as you’re battling the unfavorable winds from the south while trolling the salty waters…there are still plenty of [smaller] trophies to be had in that pond just around the corner.
(Pictured – Ethan Ring, of Norton, MA, landed this impressive five-pounder from a kayak using a Texas-rigged Senko in red shad color at the Norton Reservoir this past weekend.)
